6 OPINION DESERT MESSENGER Quartzsite s FREE Community Paper Founded by Walt Akin October 1, 2004 P P R P C. P.O. Box 3185 Quartzsite, AZ 85359 P 1st & 3rd Wednesday Sept. thru May with Special Summer Editions June, July & August EDITOR/PUBLISHER Shanana "Rain" Golden-Bear CONTRIBUTING JOURNALIST Joanne Winer GUEST COLUMNIST Louise Rouse www.DesertMessenger.com EDITORIAL By Shanana "Rain" Golden-Bear Respect for another man's opinion is worthy. It is the realization that any opinion is valuable, for it is the sign of a rational being. -Sargent Shriver (1915 – 2011) Recently there have been some highly charged emotional discussions regarding opinions expressed in this paper by myself, readers and columnists. One person's probable fact can be seen by another person as a probable lie. This is the reason why people often have differences of opinion. However, with a guest column article in a newspaper, readers usually understand it is the expressed opinion of the author. In every issue the following is published, right on this page, "Opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Desert Messenger." August 14, 2013 "Well, that's just your opinion!" We've all heard that before when we've expressed ourselves. We also know there's a distinction between opinions and absolute truths. However, there is a great deal of value to opinions, as they may contain a viewpoint that we may not have imagined. as important as respecting ourselves. It's good to take into account how and why others have arrived at their viewpoint. Compassion is always important whether you agree or not. Opinions can change over time or even in an instant. It's good to take your opinions and those of others in its entirety. Show others respect when you disagree, even if you choose to interject with your opposing outlook. Remember, too, that sometimes it's okay to Not voice your opinion. But also be willing to stand up when you believe you opinion can cause something positive to happen. Nothing is more conducive to peace of mind than not having any opinion at all. Georg C. Lichtenberg (1742 - 1799) "Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned." -Gautama Buddha We should listen and respect those who hold strong opinions, as we might learn something. That doesn't mean we have to agree with them, but respecting their right of freedom of speech is just GUEST COLUMNIST Jedidiah Free GUEST COLUMNIST The late Rosalee O Wheeler GUEST COLUMNIST Violet Kiss CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHER Starr BearCat NAME PLATE LETTERING Paul Winer www.DesertMessenger.com www.MyQuartzsite.com E-mail: Editor@DesertMessenger.com Copyright 2013 Readership of free community papers is now higher than paid daily papers and continues to grow. Not having an opinion could possibly bring more peace in our lives. By allowing others to express themselves and not take it personally brings more peace into our world. Differing opinions will continue to be published in Desert Messenger. People must be allowed to hear a plurality of opinions and then make up their own minds. Freedom of speech is a right which must be protected and honored...Plus we might even learn something, too!
