| SUPER BOWL SUNDAY | 15 SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2016 NO.5 The 66 points were the most scored in a Su- per Bowl until Dallas beat Buffalo 52-17 in the 1993 game. (The record is 75, set two years later when the 49ers beat San Diego 49-26.) It remains the third-highest scor- ing game in Super Bowl history — an oddity un- derscored by the fact that both defenses were No. 1 in their conference. Pittsburgh's Steel Cur- tain had allowed 12.2 points per game. Dallas' Doomsday Defense had allowed 13. Then again, the of- fenses included names such as Staubach, Dorsett, Swann, Brad- shaw and Franco Har- ris — and that wasn't the half of it. There were 14 Hall of Famers in this game, plus the coaches Tom Landry and Chuck Noll. No other Super Bowl can come close to making that claim. Barry Wilner: "The Steelers were at their peak, yet the Cowboys were able to put up 31 points and be within a desperation pass of tear- ing up the Steel Curtain. This game was filled with action from be- ginning to end and had Hall of Famers all over the Orange Bowl field. And the end, with Dallas scoring two touchdowns in the final 2½, but un- able to collect an onside kick with the dying sec- onds as Pittsburgh be- came the first team to win three Super Bowls." Chris Berman: "Epic game, epic franchises, a boatload of Hall of Fam- ers." Dick Enberg: "After 12 routine scripts this was the first truly ex- citing, interesting, dra- matic, superstar vs. su- perstar theater. This was NOT going to be a boring defensive bat- tle, but a brilliant show- case for extraordinary offenses. Good drama needs failure and sadly for the normally sure- handed tight end, Jackie Smith, he would provide it, dropping a certain TD pass from Staubach, that could have reversed the decision."
