ByJustinPritchard TheAssociatedPress LOS ANGELES Like a bad love song, the weekend de- molition of a bridge made famous by the movies is killing the traffic mood in Los Angeles. Destruction of the 6th Street Bridge, a supporting player in so many chase scenes down the concrete- lined Los Angeles River, starts Friday night where it crosses U.S. Highway 101, a vital route in and out of downtown that must close to do the work. These days, no foresee- able traffic nightmare es- capes its own odd brand- ing in Los Angeles. This one had been dubbed the #101slowjam on Twitter and is expected to drag on for 40 hours. If all goes well, the 2.5 miles of affected freeway will re- open Sunday, just before the Super Bowl kicks off. Eventually, the entire 3,500-foot bridge will be replaced by a new road- way that has the potential to become another Hol- lywood backdrop. A 2019 opening has been set after $449 million in work. Public officials are spreading the word of the closure with plays on the slow jam brand. "Sometimes, just some- times, you have to get your haaaands dirty to build somethin' beauti- ful," Mayor Eric Garcetti crooned in a public service spot that ended with the suited mayor thanking the Theodore Roosevelt High School jazz band arrayed behind him for "making that slightly less awkward." The bridge connects the Arts District on down- town's eastern fringe with Boyle Heights, a work- ing-class, heavily Mexi- can neighborhood. The impending demise of the span has prompted an out- pouring of nostalgia, in- cluding organized cruis- ing by fleets of low riders. Considered state-of-the- art when it was built in 1932, the bridge has been suffering from a chemical reaction that for decades has weakened its concrete. Arches above the road- way of the new span are designed to resemble the intermittent arcs of a stone skipping across water. It's hard to skip a stone over the Los An- geles River, which is just a trickle when it's not channeling torrents of storm water to the Pacific Ocean. By Amanda Lee Myers The Associated Press LOS ANGELES A Los Ange- les-area doctor convicted of murderforprescribingexor- bitant amounts of painkill- ersthatleftadozenpatients dead was sentenced Friday to 30 years to life in prison. The conviction of Dr. Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng and herlongprisonsentenceare rare for a doctor. Minutes before she was sentenced, Tseng apolo- gized in court to the fami- lies of her dead patients and otherswhobecameaddicted to prescription drugs under her care. "I suffer every day from the impact and I will do ev- erything I can to take re- sponsibility," she said. "I have learned a very hard lesson on this that will stay with me forever." In handing down the harsh sentence, Los Ange- les County Superior Court Judge George Lomeli said he found it egregious that Tseng continued to write reckless prescriptions even after learning her patients were dying. "(She's) a person who seemingly did not care about the lives of her pa- tients in this case but rather appeared more concerned about distributing danger- ouscontrolledsubstancesin an assembly line fashion so astocollectpaymentswhich amounted to her amassing several million dollars," Lomeli said. The mother of two chil- dren will be over 70 before she has a chance at release. Tseng had asked Lomeli for a 15-year prison term. Tseng prescribed "crazy, outrageous amounts of medication"topatientswho didn'tneedthepills,Deputy District Attorney John Nie- dermann told jurors during her trial. "Something is wrong with what you're doing if your patients are dying," Niedermann said. TwelveofTseng'spatients died but she was charged with just three murders be- cause other factors were in- volved in the other deaths, including drugs prescribed by other doctors and a pos- sible suicide. Tseng's lawyer, Tracy Green, has said the 46-year- old doctor had been naive to prescribe so many medi- cations and didn't think her patients would abuse them. Tseng's patients often hid addictions to painkillers and Tseng she thought she was helping ease their pain, she said. The powerful painkillers Tseng prescribed included oxycodone, sold as Perco- cet and other brand names, and hydrocodone, popu- larlyknownunderthebrand name Vicodin. The first of her patients to die had received pre- scriptions from Tseng two days earlier for oxycodone, theanti-anxietydrugXanax and the muscle-relaxer Soma, prosecutors said. Tseng was convicted of three counts of sec- ond-degree murder and all but one of 21 drug-re- lated counts. She was also charged with illegally writing prescriptions for two of the deceased pa- tients and 16 other peo- ple, three of them under- cover agents.
