| SUPER BOWL SUNDAY | 8 SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2016 Super Bowl XVI Jan. 24, 1982 Silverdome, Pontiac, Mich. 49ers 26, Cincinnati 21 Recap: The 49ers jumped to a 20-0 halime lead and then held on to complete a remarkable transformation from a 6-10 team with seemingly no prospects to become a Super Bowl champion that lost only three times all season. Coach Bill Walsh, in his third season, beat the team that denied him the head coaching job aer Paul Brown retired and instead hired Bill Johnson. Quarterback Joe Montana (14 of 22, 157 yards, 1 TD) was near-perfect in the first half, leading the 49ers on three long scoring drives. Montana scored on a 1-yard run, threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Earl Cooper, and place kicker Ray Wersching kicked four field goals to account for the scoring. Cincinnati turned the ball over four times in all, but the biggest sequence of the second half for the 49ers came when they turned back 250-pound fullback Pete Johnson on fourth-and-1 from the 1-yard line. Included was a second- and-1 stop by Jack "Hacksaw" Reynolds and a remarkable open field tackle by linebacker Dan Bunz on a swing pass from Ken Anderson to Charles Alexander at the 1. On fourth down, Johnson couldn't budge the middle of the 49ers line. Quotable: "This was one rare moment when a team without great stars and experience raises up. No one could take us. It was the highlight of my life. Anything can happen now." — 49ers coach Bill Walsh Future Hall of Famers: (49ers) Coach Bill Walsh, DE Fred Dean, QB Joe Montana, DB Ronnie Lott. Montana completed 24 of 35 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns and the 49ers defense bottled up a Miami offense that had set an NFL record during the regular season with 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns. Montana even out-rushed the Dolphins, scrambling for 59 yards with Miami gaining just 25 yards rush- ing. The 49ers lost just one game all season. Marino was sacked four times aer being sacked only four times in his pre- vious 18 games. The Dolphins actually took a 10-7 lead as Marino completed nine of his first 10 passes, but the 49ers countered with an 8-yard pass from Montana to Roger Craig, a 6-yard run by Montana and a 2-yard run by Craig before halime. The 49ers gained 537 yards of total offense, including 211 yards rushing and had a 37:11 to 22:49 advantage in time of pos- session. Quotable: "All we heard all week long was Miami's offense. How are you going to stop them? Deep inside we knew we had a great offense too. Nobody was thinking about how to stop us." — 49ers quarterback Joe Montana Future Hall of Famers: (49ers) Coach Bill Walsh, QB Joe Montana, CB Ronnie Lott, DE Fred Dean. Cincinnati had taken a 16- 13 lead with 3:20 remaining on a 40-yard field goal by Jim Breech. To make mat- ters worse, the 49ers were backed up to their 8-yard line aer a holding penalty on the ensuing kickoff. No matter. Montana guided the 49ers to a game-winning touchdown, with the big play a 27- yard completion to Jerry Rice, who was named the game's MVP with 11 receptions for 215 yards. The score was just 3-3 at halime and there were no touchdowns scored until the game was 44:26 old on a 93-yard kickoff return by Stanford Jen- nings that gave Cincinnati a 13-6 lead. 49ers safety Ronnie Lott had the game's most tell- ing blow, a fourth-and-1 stop of star Bengals run- ning back Ickey Woods. Woods, who had gained 1,066 yards, scored 15 touchdowns and aver- aged 5.3 yards per carry in the regular-season, had 79 yards on 20 attempts.
