| SUPER BOWL SUNDAY | 19 SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2016 NO.1 The Patriots were 18-0 coming into the Super Bowl, but Giants quarter- back Eli Manning con- verted three third downs, none bigger than on Da- vid Tyree's spectacular catch, when he pinned the ball against his hel- met. Manning completed the drive with a 13 -yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds left in the game. The 12- play, 83- yard drive earned Eli the game's MVP — one year after his older brother Peyton won his first Su- per Bowl and was MVP. A sampling of ballots from those who voted Su- per Bowl 42 as the great- est of all time, and why (first-place votes unless otherwise noted): Dick Stockton, Fox Sports: "The fact that Eli Manning had to escape the pressure of a Patri- ots rush which had him ducking, scrambling and just trying to stay on his feet, was as heart-pound- ing as the catch itself. The thrilling final drive featuring perhaps the most amazing single play of any Super Bowl, along with the significance of the prospects for a per- fect season makes this my top Super Bowl of all time." Chris Berman, ESPN (third-place vote): "One minute from 19-0." Bob McGinn, Milwau- kee Journal-Sentinel: "It was the night that the ugly duckling, Eli Man- ning, came of age. David Tyree's miraculous recep- tion will never be forgot- ten. New York contained Tom Brady with an all- time pass rush led by Justin Tuck and Michael Strahan, who was play- ing his final game." Sam Farmer, Los An- geles Times: "There was no feeling-out period for the teams. They were im- mediately hammering each other. I attribute that to the fact that they played in the regular sea- son finale, and the Giants could easily have rolled over in that game. It meant nothing to them, yet they still played all- out and tried to stave off a 16-0 season for New England. They made the Patriots earn it. So New York took that momen- tum and confidence into the Super Bowl, and was really aggressive from the start. What's more, the Patriots are so po- larizing and coldly effi- cient and arrogant that you could feel that crowd in Arizona turn and start rooting for the under- dogs. Eli was the under- dog of underdogs. He was the little brother who came through in the end for the team that wasn't supposed to be there."
