ByKellyOsborne Beginning Monday the Red Bluff Veterans Service Office will have additional VSO/VSR appointments to assist veterans and their families with claims on Tuesday and Thursday af- ternoons. Kelly Osborne is a full- time VSO. Beverly Holden is a part-time VSR and she will work all day Tuesday, Thursday and half a day on Wednes- day. Joel Johnson, our new VA Work Study stu- dent, will be in the office all day Monday, Wednes- day and Friday. Joel is in training and is helping with administration — he is not a VSR. The VSR Corning Sat- ellite appointments will be Feb. 11 and 18. Please continue to be patient and know that we are do- ing our best to serve our veterans and their fam- ilies — we have one full- time VSO and a part-time VSR. Please see additional Corning details below. We will be closed on Fridays for administration, train- ing and claim follow-up. Redding Veteran Re- source Center case man- ager Michelle Fox will be co-located at the Red Bluff VSO office on Feb. 10 and 24 from 1:30-4 p.m. The VRC assists Te- hama County veterans with transitional hous- ing and other veteran emergency assistance. Please contact the VRC at 223-3211 for additional details. In addition to helping with claims, the VSO of- fice began validating mil- itary service for honorably discharged Veterans who would like to have "Vet- eran" noted on their Cali- fornia Driver's License. As with Tehama County Vet- eran ID cards, please bring your DD-214. As staffing permits, we will issue the Veteran Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) pa- perwork for your Califor- nia Driver's License in the Red Bluff office 9-11 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Corning appointments will be by walk in during regularly scheduled VSO visits and the DMV form will be mailed back to you the same afternoon from the Red Bluff office, or we can bring it back to you the following week dur- ing our Corning VSO visit. Once the DMV form is validated/stamped by the VSO, the form is ready to be taken to the DMV. Once accredited, Bev- erly Holden will be able to sign the DMV forms. As a reminder, assisting Veterans and their fami- lies with their VA claims is our highest priority, as we have Veterans with se- rious health and financial issues. There are many state and federal benefits and programs available to veterans and their de- pendents. To find out if you are eligible for any of these benefits, call the Tehama County Veterans Service Office (VSO) at 529-3664. The VSO address is the Bank of America Building, 955 Main St., Ste. C, in Red Bluff. Office appointment hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thurs- day, closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch. The Red Bluff office VSO is by ap- pointment only. Corning VSO walk-ins are at the Veterans Memorial Hall 9-11 a.m. the first three Thursdays of the month. Friday's we are closed for administration and out- reach. VSO NEWS New schedule for Veterans Services California Retired Teachers Association and Tehama County Depart- ment of Education Teacher Grants fund Partnership Science projects, STEM- related robotics kits, class- room gardens and librar- ies, art supplies and field trips. These are just some of the ways more than 70 teachers in Tehama and Glenn counties are using their $100 grants to grab students' attention and en- rich lessons. The grants came from a partnership that devel- oped between the local re- tired teachers association and the Tehama County Department of Education. For 2015-2016, Mt. Las- sen Div. 9 of the Califor- nia Retired Teachers As- sociation offered six $100 mini-grants to classroom teachers, three for Glenn County and three for Te- hama County and appli- cations started coming in. When Tehama County Superintendent of Schools Charles Allen found out about the number of ap- plications and the ways teachers planned to use the mini-grants, he de- cided that applications from all the teachers in the county deserved to be funded. A community partnership with Mt. Las- sen Div. 9 was formed to deliver a total of 69 grants in Tehama County. Division 9 members were thrilled for all the teacher who had applied and have just finished de- livering grant checks to all of those teachers. Teachers from these schools received grants: Corning High School, Maywood, Olive View, and West Street in Corning; Vista, Bidwell, Jackson Heights, Lincoln Street, Metteer, Red Bluff High, Salisbury, and Tehama eL- earning Academy in Red Bluff; other schools in Te- hama County were Kirk- wood, Evergreen Elemen- tary; Gerber, Richfield, Vina, Lassen View, Los Molinos Elementary, An- telope, Berrendos, Manton and Plum Valley. In Glenn County, Orland High School, Fairview School in Orland and Murdock Elementary in Willows re- ceived grants.
