ByMarilynAdams Strongholdsarear- eas in our lives that stub- bornly resist change. Ad- dictions, unforgiveness, self-hatred, bitterness, and depression are a few examples. Clay is dry and solid. It has to have wa- ter worked into it in order for it to be shaped. So it is with our lives. Strong- holds that the enemy has been able to set up in our hearts cause hardness of heart. Hebrews 3:13 says, "But exhort one another daily, while it is called 'Today,' lest any of you be hardened through the de- ceitfulness of sin." Clay needs much wa- ter to be pliable in the potter's hands. It has to be malleable with no re- sistance. Do you have ar- eas in your life that re- sist change? Maybe you have tried by the strength of your will to overcome a stronghold, but it stub- bornly remains. God's water of the Word is the only way to permeate that hard surface. Ephesians 5:26 says of the Church, "That He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word." Let's take a strong- hold of anger and see how working God's word into this stronghold will bring change. There is a great verse in Proverbs 29:11. The Amplified says, "A (self-confident) fool ut- ters all his anger, but a wise man holds it back and stills it." When we take other verses about anger and write them down, they become our "working" paper. We speak these words out loud because faith comes by hearing the Word. As we speak them, targeted truth begins to penetrate and weaken the strong- hold. Once it is weakened, it can be successfully torn down and destroyed. Another stronghold may be fear. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." We must recognize that fear is an enemy tactic. This verse says that it is a spirit. Fear is a fiery dart. It is a convincing suggestion. It only gains ground if we dialogue with it. It has no power over us, unless we give it that power through our thoughts. When we in- graft the strength words of His promises, fear has no ground to stand on. His promises are backed by His faithfulness. Titus 1:2 says that it is impossi- ble for God to lie. As you speak verses that fortify you against the lies of the enemy, the stronghold of fear will weaken and then be defeated. 2 Corinthians 10:4 says, "For the weapons of our warfare are not car- nal but mighty in God for pulling down strong- holds." God gave Jere- miah the sequence. First it must be rooted out, then the ground can be replanted. Jeremiah 1:10 says, "See, I have this day set you over the na- tions and over the king- doms, to root out and to pull down, to destroy and to throw down, to build and to plant." As we are tearing down the enemy's stronghold, we are build- ing a new stronghold of truth with the same verses. His word is a dou- ble-edged sword. His pen- etrated word renews our mind. James 1:21 says, "There- fore lay aside all filthi- ness and overflow of wick- edness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls." Pride will resist the discipline of the ingrafting. Humil- ity opens the way for the word to penetrate deeply through His grace. It is all a work of grace. He is able to do far above what we can even ask or think because of His power that is working in us, AS we work His word into our hearts. His grace is the transforming power. It is not our own strength. Our flesh profits nothing. As we continue to hide His word in our hearts, it will strengthen us to overcome and be more than conquerors. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." Salvation is a gift. It cannot be earned. Sal- vation comes through be- lieving that Jesus' death was for you personally. Acts 16:31 says, "...believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved..." GOD TALK Destroying strongholds St. Peter's Episcopal Church will be offering an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Feb. 10. The practice of Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from the previous year's Palm Sunday palm branches. The ashes are placed on the foreheads of partici- pants often accompanied by the words, "Remem- ber that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" taken from Genesis 3:19. Ash Wednesday is ac- knowledged on the first day of Lent, which occurs 46 days before Easter and is observed by many Chris- tian denominations includ- ing Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians and Anglicans and Episco- palians. The 40 days of Lent are frequently times of fasting or penitence reflecting the Gospel stories of Matthew, Mark and Luke in which Je- sus Christ spent 40 days in the desert fasting and en- during temptations by Sa- tan. The Ash Wednesday service is open to all who come, regardless of denom- ination. St. Peter's is at 510 Jefferson St., on the cor- ner of Jefferson and Elm streets. For more information, call 527-5205 or write to stpeters@sbcglobal.net. Visit www.saintpetersepis- copal.org. LENT St.Peter'stoofferAshWednesdayservice St. Paul Lutheran Church in Red Bluff will offer an Ash Wednesday evening service at 6:45 p.m. Wednes- day, Feb. 10 at 455 Jefferson St. and the corner of Jeffer- son and Elm streets. A series of weekly Lenten services will be held at 6:45 p.m. each Wednesday Feb. 17 through March 23. All Easter celebrants are welcome to attend ser- vices. For more information, call 527-3414 or visit www. lutheranchurch-redbluff. org. LUTHERAN Ash Wednesday service will be offered During the season of Lent, The Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff, at 838 Jefferson St., will be offer- ing a Wednesday evening worship service, open to the entire community, fea- turing "The Wartime Ser- mons of Dr. Peter Marshall." According to the volume of these sermons, published in 2005, "Scottish born Dr. Peter Marshall immigrated to America in 1927. During the next 22 years, before his untimely death in 1949 at the age of 46, he became one of the na- tion's most famous preach- ers, pastor of Washington, D.C.'s historic New York Av- enue Presbyterian Church, and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. His wife, author Catherine Marshall, wrote his best-selling biography, A Man Called Peter, which was subsequently made into the much-heralded 1955 movie. "'The Wartime Sermons of Dr. Peter Marshall' in- cludes many of his most sought-after messages de- livered during World War II. Today, as we continue to face a war against global terrorism during the after- math of September 11, 2001, these wartime sermons, preached more than 50 years ago, have never been more timely, appropriate or desperately needed." The Presbyterian Church is pleased to offer a service to the community at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10 through March 16, with a concluding service being offered at 5:30 p.m. Thurs- day, March 24. The sermons will be read aloud as we once again con- sider his timeless message. The services will be held in the chapel. All are wel- come.
