Being the parent of a terminally ill child is a different story altogether. The bills, the heart break, the stress all add up, and all the while mom and dad look for ways to encourage their brave charges. They also look for ways to build memories and for reasons to smile, to laugh. Give Kids the World Village is a 70-acre resort with more than l,140 villa accommodations and attractions that exists solely to bring smiles to the faces of terminally ill children. The whole village is designed to illicit laughter, foster encouragement and be a memorable and magical experience for free. On Sept. 15, Candlewood Suites and Cape Fear Harley-Davidson will host a Charity Ride/Block Party to raise funds for this noble cause. Give Children the World Village is the official charity of Candlewood Suites, a relative newcomer to the area. Candlewood Suites is a major contributor to Give Kids the World Village, said Michelle Williams, event spokesperson. We are constantly looking to raise funds and we have things that we do year-round, but one day Paula Schronce, our operations manager who rides with the Patriot Guard suggested we have a poker run. The staff at Candlewood Suites reached out to their neighbor, Cape Fear Harley-Davidson to help sponsor the event and to date, the response has been incredible. We are so excited about this event. This is an amazing and generous community. The response has been overwhelming, said Williams. It is something that we want to make happen every year. The reach of Give Kids the World Village is long. In fact, Williams noted that there are local families who have benefitted from the charity. If you go to the website, it is such a worthwhile cause. It seems so small and insignificant. What we are doing can make a big impact on the families. It is not just the kids who make it special. It is so rewarding to hear families say that for a week they can forget their problems The block party is going to be a lot of fun. There will be bounce houses, games, prizes, face painting and more. Several local sports teams including the SwampDogs, the FireAntz are sending their mascots to the event to entertain the crowds. Attendees can expect some pretty great giveaways and raffles, too. The prizes we have are phenomenal, said Williams. We have giveaways to Tweetsie Railroad. We have certificates to IHG hotels, which are good for a hotel stay just about anywhere around the country. We have flat-screen TVs and gift cards to just about everywhere. It has been crazy it is great. Preregister at Candlewood Suites any day before the ride from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. On the day of the ride, registration starts at 10 a.m. Kickstands up at 11 a.m. Riders will return by 1 p.m. $20 per bike.
