A ARTS Best Gallery Cape Fear Studios 148 Maxwell St., Fayetteville 910.433.2986 www.capefearstudios.com Established in 1989, Cape Fear Studios is the only visual-arts cooperative in Fayetteville. Its a place where creativity blossoms. Artists create in an open environment where they can receive enouragement and advice from their fellow artists. Local artists who want to participate in the cooperative pay an annual membership fee to get studio space, and then they have to give a little more their time to ensure the smooth day-to-day operations of the studio. Located on Maxwell Street, in the heart of the citys center, the studio is comprised of a gallery, a retail area and eight artist studios. In the gallery and retail area, the works of potters, sculptors, photographers, painters, glass, wood, jewelry and other artisans are on display. These are all unique pieces created by the more than 40 member artists. In addition to showcasing the works of its own members, the studio also features a new exhibit each month, which may come from the works of one of its members or it may come from a regional, national or international artist. Working closely with the Arts Council, the new exhibits open during 4th Friday. If you feel the need to see creativity in action, you can stop by and observe local artists at work in one of the eight studios, which are rented by member artists. You never know what you might see being created right in front of your eyes. Cape Fear Studios is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is closed on Sunday. Ken Griggs lives a double life. By day he dons the uniform of the U.S. Army, where he serves in the Medical Corps as a radiologist, and in the evenings he can be found in any number of costumes as he brings an array of characters to life on the Cape Fear Regional Theatre stage. Griggs is to theater what a utility player is to baseball. He can sing. He can dance. He can break your heart telling a story and he can make you split your side laughing with his perfect comedy. Its not a surprise that local residents named him the Best Local Actor. Hes the total package when hes on the Cape Fear Regional Theatre stage. Coming off its 50th anniversary season, its no surprise that the Cape Fear Regional Theatre was named the Best Live Theatre. Last season was action-packed with special shows and events, which culminated with Encore, a retrospective of the theatres best plays over its 50-year history. The show brought back some of the communitys most beloved actors and actresses who have been in retirement from the stage, as well as some of its greatest products: those children and adults who have left the comfort of the community for big-city lights and stages. As the theatre enters a new season, new Artistic Director Tom Quaintance is pulling out all of the stops to ensure that the theatre will remain the tops in this category for years to come. Best Play/Musical Theatre Gilbert Theaters The Rocky Horror Show 116 Green St., Fayetteville 910.678.7186 www.gilberttheater.com Best Live Theatre/Best Local Actress/Best Local Actor Cape Fear Regional Theatre/BoThorp/Ken Griggs 1209 Hay St., Fayetteville 910.323.4234 www.cfrt.org Last year the Cape Fear Regional Theatre celebrated its 50th Anniversary and said goodbye to the rst lady of theatre, Bo Thorp, who had served as the theatres artistic director for a number of years. Thorp, who has long held the title of Best Local Actress, retired. She is still a familiar face and presence in the life of the theatre from directing shows during the anniversary season to starring in them. One of the states rst ladies of the stage, Thorp is beloved by the community, for which she has a passion. Upon her retirement, Thorp noted that she was sad to be leaving the day-to-day operations of the theatre, but looked forward to spending more time working on her craft that is, if the theatre would have her. With this vote, the community is saying they wouldnt have it any other way. 8 BEST OF FAYETTEVILLE SEPTEMBER 12-18, 2012 In a repeat performance, Gilbert Theater again took the title of Best Play/Musical with its staging of the quirky, but beloved musical The Rocky Horror Show. Brought to life by local actor Steve Jones, the show is a visual delight. Jones and his ensemble pranced their way into the communitys heart, while wearing six-inch heels and ladys lingerie. They invited us to sing and dance with them. They transported us into a land of the fantastic, a trip we were all too willing to take, again and again. Best Movie Theater Millstone 14 3400 Footbridge Ln., Hope Mills 910.354.2124 www.stonetheatres.com Community residents have a number of movie theaters to choose from when it comes time to get their cinematic needs fed. The Millstone 14 in Hope Mills has quickly earned its share of the market and continues to draw huge crowds to its daily offerings. The theater opened with much fanfare, and things havent slowed down since day one. Drive by any weekend and the parking lot is lled with cars almost to the point of overowing. Could it be the 14 screens? The 42 high-back leather rockers on 21 risers that are so comfy and relaxing? Or maybe the Dolby Digital 3D and Digital Sound delivering super sharp pictures and top-notch sound effects in every showing? Maybe, but the expanded concessions dont hurt either.
