Gary and Todd Smith, the outgoing owners of the rm, were xtures in the community. Both father and son were active in the community sitting on local government boards and volunteering in community organizations. So it came as more than a shock when rumors started circulating that the two men, and their company were in trouble. When word got out that the company were under federal investigation for a check-kiting scheme, local residents were in shock. Many stepped up to the plate to defend them. When the two disappeared and the doors to their ofces were shuttered, local residents were aghast. Facing huge law suits and indictment by the feds, with their real estate holdings in Fayetteville coming up for auction, the scandal of Smith Advertising has yet to play out. But when it does, it will be the talk of the town. Biggest Waste of Tax Dollars Gates Four Annexation 6775 Irongate Drive, Fayetteville 910-424-0542 www. gatesfour.com For years the residents of Gates Four sat quietly in their idyllic community living their lives with little attention from the rest of the community. While they had many ammenities inside the subdivision, their children attended local schools in the Hope Mills area. Its residents ate dinner in Hope Mills restaurants and made quick runs to Hope Mills grocery stores when they needed to pick up a few things. So, it was a little disturbing to them when the City of Fayetteville began making annexation overtures. They had always believed that if, and when, the time came for them to be annexed, they would move into the city limits of Hope Mills. That wasnt to be the case. The city rst tried to snap the community up in the Big Bang Best Bank In Town Since 1872 annexation. But the big bucks attorneys paid by the home owners association quashed that move. In what the city alleges was an agreement to be annexed, and residents dispute, the city made another move to annex. After months of legal wrangling, the residents came kicking and screaming into the city. Their benet: trash pick-up and a water bill. And much to their disappointment, on the rst day the city was to pick-up their trash, they were forgotten. That was okay though, because while the city tax man counted his money, the legislature took up their battle and within a few weeks of becoming Fayetteville residents, Gates Four homeowners were once again simply residents of Gates Four. The countless hours and money spent over this several year battle tops our readers list as The Biggest Waste of Tax Dollars.
