The structure was condemned at the time, but the family had a dream of bringing it back to life, even going so far as to preserve the leaded glass panel in the original storefront where businesses called Johnson's Cafe and Brady's Soda Shop had once operated. They achieved their goal, and in December 1999, the Rude Awakening coffee house made its debut. Now, it's closing in on the 20th anniversary of its coffee-phoenix feat. Rude Awakening customers rave about the hazelnut frappe or the cheese croissant, not to mention the delicious cup of coffee you can get there. One customer summed it up : "I have been coming here since their first day open,'' he wrote. "Real coffee, great service and baristas who remember you and what you like.
