SEPTEMBER 19-25, 2018 UCW 5 Best of Fayetteville Best Local Landmark Market House Downtown Fayetteville has seen incredible growth and development this year. Through all the changes, the Market House, sitting front and center at the roundabout of Person, Hay, Green and Gillespie Streets, remains an iconic landmark and visual symbol for the city. It carries history while also evolving in function and meaning. The Market House is on the city seal. It's the subject of local photography contests, post- cards and paintings. And twice a year, the sunrise shines just right through the structure's archways, creating a spectacular view of Hay Street that's well- documented and well-loved. Though sometimes contro- versial, this post-Revolutionary War structure is both politically and economical- ly significant. Fayetteville hosted the North Carolina Constitutional Convention here. And at this site, which was then a statehouse, delegates ratified the U.S. Constitution. on Nov. 21, 1789. The statehouse burned in a fire in 1831, and the present Market House was built in its place in 1832. The ground level of the building was used as a market- place until 1907, and up until 1906, the upper level served as the town hall. Today, the iconic building hosts local history exhibits and is open the second and fourth Fridays of the month. The view from the upper level offers a fresh perspective of downtown. Best Little-Known Attraction Sweet Tea Shakespeare 801 Arsenal Ave. 910-420-4383 or www.sweetteashakespeare.com Sweet Tea Shakespeare, the down- town theater company that puts on quirky outdoor performances that include live music and simple, creative staging, won't remain a winner in the "little-known" category for long. Though artistic director and president Jeremy Fiebig founded the company in 2012, he didn't find a permanent home for his shows until 2014. Now housed on the grounds of the 1897 Poe House, STS is growing, and word about the home- grown wonder of its fresh take on Shakespeare and classical theater is spreading. The STS setting is relaxed and friendly – audience members bring their own blankets or lawn chairs and sit surrounding the performance area – and the price is affordable, making a unique night on the town accessible and fun. Sweet tea, spirits and dinner plates are available for purchase to enjoy while you watch the show. STS includes a youth company, Green Tea, which offers young adults ages 12-17 monthly classes and the chance to perform. The company also regularly partners with various restaurants and organizations to bring its stories beyond the grounds of the Poe House. A few months ago, in an interview with Up & Coming Weekly, Fiebig reflected on his future goals for the theater company, saying, "We want to grow our rela- tionship with Fayetteville and its businesses, organizations, families and individ- uals. I think for a city to work, actors and directors and designers are as critical as police and firemen and EMS workers. "It's so important to us that we aren't just making art but making art for here and making artists who will make a life here."
