I grew up secretly "borrowing" albums from my mom's CD collection, back when being in a mail order CD club was the "cool thing" to do. Many weekends, my mom and I would hit I-95 to head out to the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre to hear her one of her favorite artists — I'm guessing I sur- prised her when she noticed I could sing along to all the songs at my first Alanis Morisette concert (not my proudest 6-year-old moment). Needless to say, her CD collection was moved to the top shelf of the bookcase after that particular show. Nonetheless, even an unreachable CD collection couldn't stop my love affair with music. And live music? What a treat! I would find any reason for my mom to take me to see live music — even going so far as to ask to go to see my 60-year-old, 6th grade P.E. teacher play in his beach music band in a run-down, hole-in-the-wall restaurant one summer when I was in middle school. And, after seeing N'SYNC perform at the Dean Dome at UNC in '01, I knew I had the whole "college" thing figured out. Desperate? I think so. But I had to be around music. It moved me. I needed to feel it pounding in my chest. I needed to know every lyric, every guitar solo, every era, every genre, anything I could get my hands (and ears) on. Now in a place where I can sometimes afford to go to a concert, I know that most of the time, a good show is going to cost you. So, now when I hear the words free concert, my expectations immediately lower. Have I even heard of this artist? Probably not. Has anyone? Slim chance. Will it even be fun? Debatable. I'll go, but I might cringe a bit — but, hey, I work in radio — it's kind of my job. I am so glad I took a chance on Next Fest. Year after year, Next Fest is free of charge — they just ask you to bring a few cans of food to donate to the Second Harvest Food Bank of eastern North Carolina. Thousands of people line up at Temple Baptist Church in Eastover every year for this show — and it does not disappoint. Big-name Christian artists, actual professional equip- ment, concessions, humongous stage — nothing about it says free show. They deliver the Gospel, great music, good food and a good time, all for the price of nothing, just a few cans you already had in your pantry anyway. They feed your need for live music, while you help feed thousands of families across the eastern part of our beautiful state. What other show could you go to where you're definitely "getting," but you end up "giving?" This year's Next Fest is Oct. 3, and you'll see artists like local band Surrounding Jericho, I Am They, Wolves At The Gate, Tedashi, Capital Kings, and headliner, Red. Bring your family, your friends and a couple cans of food for the biggest and best free music festival of the year in our area. You wouldn't want to be the one who has no clue what everyone's going to be talking about. We'll be there! Will you? Got questions?
