October 3, 2012 Quartzsite makes the Wall Street Journal By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear An article focusing on Quartzsite appeared Sep- tember 27, 2012, on page A8 in the U.S. edition of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), with the headline "Small-Town Politics, All-Out War". The article was written by Tamara Audi with con- tributions by James Oberman. Photos were taken by Sandy Huffaker for the WSJ. The link to the full online article is at www.QuartzsiteBlog.com. Of the 1300+ word article only 35 words men- tion the famous rock shows. Audi wrote, "This tiny desert outpost is known for 70-degree winters, an annual gem show that draws thousands of visitors, and a nudist bookstore owner who conducts busi- ness in little more than fl ip-fl ops and a straw hat." The remainder of the article showcases local po- litical activists, Ed Foster, Jennifer "Jade" and her husband, John "Jack" Jones, and Council Member Pat Workman and their favorite adversary, Police Chief Jeff Gilbert. Blurred in the background of one of many beautiful photographs taken at his properties, is Richard Oldham, Quartzsite's fi rst mayor, and local business owner who has his own disputes with the town. Foster told WSJ, "We're calling this the Twilight Zone in Quartzsite!" Council refused to seat Foster after he won the majority of the votes in the May 15th election, since Foster refused to pay the town $2200 in fi nes. Foster is scheduled for court Oct. 4th asking to be seated as mayor. Foster told WSJ that even if he were seated as mayor, he will sue the town for the Council's ap- pointment of a chair and vice chair. Foster prom- ised, "This fi ght's not over!" However, Interim Town Manager Laura Bruno told WSJ, "Our town council is coming together and is really trying to work as a team to move things forward." www.DesertMessenger.com Food Handler Classes La Paz County Health Dept. provides Food Handler Classes in Quartzsite.
