October 3, 2012 By Joanne Winer www.DesertMessenger.com Operation Hero Comfort benefit Dec. 1st Operation Hero Comfort has been very busy this summer with sending packages to 11 units during this time. They send out 2 packages to each unit, twice a month, so that means that over the summer, in the hot- test weather, volunteers worked very hard to pack up 44 packages each month with all kinds of food items, books, magazines, toiletries and any- thing requested by the troops they have adopted. It has been the most packages going out each month for the past few years. Operation Hero Comfort, founded by Doc and Anita Carlson, is a non- profi t organization that has vowed to keep sending "care packages" to any troop unit in harm's way that they get contacted about. Several units ad- opted by the organization have been from this area, and some of them have just returned home after being in Afghanistan and Iraq. This week, they got word that 5 more of their Adopted units are returning home or have already come home, so they are now back to 6 units again. They will add more as they are asked to adopt from names that are given to them--anyone who lives in this area who has relatives being deployed to where they are in harm's way can contact Anita Carl- son at 927-4292 or 763-639-9330 for more information about adding a name to the list of those who receive packages each month. packages include canned food (no pork), crackers, trail mixes, snacks, tuna, candy, spices, books, maga- zines, toiletry items, videos, DVDs, CDs, rice, beans, peanut butter, candies, etc.- anything is welcome. You can drop off any donations of items at several places in town--the Quartzsite Community Thrift Store, Readers' Oasis Books, Quartzsite Senior Apartments, or call Anita and she will arrange to get them. Operation Hero Comfort will be holding their annual Silent Auction Benefi t on Saturday, December 1 starting at 1 p.m. at Town Hall. There will be displays of the pictures and letters that the troops have sent back thanking Operation Hero Comfort for their support, as well as many fl ags that they have sent back to show their thanks. There will also be a great silent auction, with lots of donated items from local residents and busi- nesses, as well as from many vendors and other businesses out of town who have helped in the past. Proud Neighbors of Quartzsite (PNQ) announced dates for the 4th Annual Rockin' in Quartzsite A Celebration of the Arts! Rockin' Reveal Artist Reception will be held Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 6:00-8:00pm at the "Rock Motel" (a beautifully transformed warehouse) at Tyson Wells Show- ground, 100 W. Kuehn, Quartzsite. Here is your chance to meet the art- ists who will have spent the previous two weeks painting and transform- ing a blank slab of rock into the most amazing Rock Art Piece! No peeking until Saturday, Nov. 3rd! The Theme for this year's event is "Our Beautiful Arizona". Thrivent for Lutherans will also be helping again with their match- ing funds program. There will also be cards available to sign that will be sent to the troops before Christmas, and door prizes too. If you have any items that can be used in the silent auction that you would like to donate, please contact Anita Carlson at the above numbers. Operation Hero Comfort de- pends on donations and holds one fundraiser each year, a huge silent auction that helps raise awareness of what is happening to our troops, and to help raise money to buy needed items for packages and for postage to get them sent out. Each package costs over $12.00 to mail, and it adds up when so many are going out each month. Items needed for the "Foster Parents" sponsor the Rock Art during the winter season, No- vember thru February.
