Always interested in chil- dren's issues, she was instrumental in getting the Arizona Children's Colony established for children with special needs. For many years Nellie or Joe served as trustees for the Northern Yuma County School District and in the early 1950s Charles and I had the opportunity to work with the Bushes in establishing a second high school in the District. Geographically Quartzsite was the logical choice but at that time the greatest population of children was centered near Salome where the new school opened in 1954. Nellie encouraged women to be in- volved in their communities and was instrumental in chartering the Vi-Sa- Wen Women's Club as part of the Ari- zona Federation of Woman's Clubs. Several Quartzsite women attended the Vicksburg, Salome and Wenden club and with Nellie's encouragement or- ganized the Quartzsite Woman's Club in 1951. Nellie became the President of the Arizona Federation of Woman's Clubs in 1955. Until the very day she unexpectedly passed away on October 27, 1963, to the benefit of Northern Yuma County, Nellie T remained very involved in na- tional, state, county and local issues. www.DesertMessenger.com Underage drinking is illegal We here at Quartzsite Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (QSAPC) have become aware of several places in town that are providing alcohol to minors. This is illegal; the town of Quartzsite has in place a Social Host Ordinance. The ordinance has been in place since April 2011. This ordinance makes it a class 1 misdemeanor if you are caught serving alcohol to anyone under the age of 21. This ordinance states that anyone encouraging underage drinking will be held accountable. Also, anyone failing to take appropriate actions to prevent the consumption of alcohol on their personal premises will also be held ac- countable and will face consequences. Not only is it illegal, it is harmful to the youth of this community. It has been scientifically proven that drinking un- der the age of 21 will kill brain cells used in rational thought, to be able to think of the consequences for our ac- tions.
