January 18, 2012 Arizona Western College (AWC) Quartzsite Learning Center welcomes new associate instructor George Mor- rison to the teaching fold this winter season. Mr. Morrison earned a bachelor degree in For- est Recreation from Utah State University and a master degree (also in Forest Recreation) from the University of Mon- tana. He then enjoyed a 32 year career with the Federal Government. He served 3 years in the U.S. Forest Service, 12 years with the National Park Service, and 17 years with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service be- fore retiring in 1994. An avid bird watcher, general naturalist AWC welcomes new instructor and hiker, George joined the part-time El- derhostel staff at Yavapai College in Prescott for 8 years. During his time living in the Chihuahuan Desert, Great Basin Desert, and Sonoran Desert , George gained a per- sonal love and feeling for desert ecology and its wildlife. The Colorado River's chain of National Wildlife Refuges was his home for over 10 years. This is Mr. Morrison's first year teaching per- sonal enrichment courses at the AWC Quartz- site Learning Center. His classes include: Exploring Ciblola National Wildlife Refuge, Exploring Bill Williams National Wildlife Ref- uge, Exploring Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, Desert Ecology, and Desert Birds. Several of these classes are still available for student registration. Exploring Kofa Nation- al Wildlife Refuge begins Tuesday, 2/07/12. Students will meet from 2-3 p.m. on 2/7 and 2/14 for lecture and visual presentations re- garding the 900,560 acre refuge, its history, ecosystem and wildlife inhabitants. They will then participate in a field trip to the ref- uge on 2/21 from 10a.m. to 4p.m. Mr. Morrison will also teach a class on Desert Ecology in February. This class will meet on (Thursdays) 2/09 and 2/16 for lec- ture and visual presentations on flora and fauna, underlying geology and meteorology that is a basis for soil types, as well as the associated plant and animal species of the Sonoran and Mohave Deserts. The class will participate in two half day field trips on 2/23 and 3/01 to observe and identify lo- www.DesertMessenger.com cal desert inhabitants discussed in class. In March, Mr. Morrison is scheduled to teach a class about Desert Birds. This class will meet on Wednesdays for 4 weeks. The first two classes will meet from 2-4p.m. at the college and students will learn about the desert bird species of the So- noran and Mohave Deserts. Identification tips, general life history, and basic eco- logical requirements of each bird family will be discussed. The last two meetings will be half day field trips to observe desert birds in their natural habitats. Scott Newnham Quartzsite resident Scott Newnham passed away at his home, on the evening of December 27, 2011 after a prolonged illness. Scott was born August 8, 1962 and originated from Coos Bay, Oregon. Scott is survived by his wife Carol Newnham, four daughters, and a sister.
