I remember my grand- mother saying, "If we didn't need food, we'd all be rich!" This may be true. But then, a life without food would be a little less pleasurable. PUT A LID ON IT When I first started cooking, making a per- fect grilled cheese sand- wich seemed to elude me. Either my sandwich was toasted on the out - side with unmelted cheese in- side, or the cheese was gooey but the outside burnt. Then I figured out the old fry cook trick: put a lid on it! Once one side is perfectly grilled, turn it over and then cover the pan with a lid or baking sheet. You will never settle for a sub-par grilled cheese again. Both groups will spon- soring the chamber's big- gest mixer of the year on Thursday. This year's mixer will feature live entertainment by Fire Mountain, Round- Up fajitas will be given out by the Tehama County CattleWomen, and lots of fun with Round-Up Rodeo stars and sponsor celebri - ties. The mixer, which has be- come a mainstay of Round- Up festivities, will take place 5:30-10 p.m., accord- ing to hosts Paul and Kit Reynolds, owners of Reyn- olds Ranch & Farm Supply. Again this year, in an attempt to exercise addi- tional crowd control and to aid the Cattlemen's As- sociation and the Chamber in fundraising efforts, ad- mission to the mixer will be by special Round-Up Mixer badges provided by the Palomino Room. The event is open to those 21 years and older. Badges are $10 each, available for pre-sale at The Loft and the Palomino Room or Thursday night at the door. By sally ainsworth Tehama County librarian It's springtime in Te- hama County and that means at least two things — Easter and the rodeo. The library is celebrating both enthusiastically. Marshmallow peeps are the stars of the rodeo deco - rations which fill the entire front entry of the library. The peeps — well, they are everywhere, from the dance hall girl peeps clad in pink in front of the sa - loon, to the square dancer peeps with little bandanas tied around their marsh- mallowy necks, to the peg- leg peep with an eye patch on one tiny eye. The Tehama County Li - brary won the 2014 Grand Prize, Public Office plaque and the 2014 Best Bribe plaque in the Downtown Decorating Contest.Be sure to see the two diora - mas that Phyllis Walthen has donated to the Tehama County library. She hand- crafted tiny cowboy and an- imal models in clay which was baked to create per- manent substance to illus- trate a day of branding and another day of sheep shear- ing. Phyllis is 92 and she was eager to tell us that she vis- ited both events personally to get the feel of the story she was able to tell about the two activities. The mod - els are extremely realistic, especially the folds of wool that are falling away from the sheep's body. There are cattle dogs in evidence and camp - fires. You can almost hear and smell the excitement. These diora - mas are go- ing to be on display at the Red Bluff branch and then moved to the Corning and Los Mo - linos branches in turn. Be sure to watch our Face Book page to see where the display will be. Next news item is the Cowboy Poetry reading to - day. Don Hanley comes from Washington State ev- ery year to act as our mas- ter of ceremonies and to in- troduce the local and out- of-town poets. It's largely a funny, and sometimes poi- gnant, feeling that comes from hearing these talented poets. Be prepared to laugh a lot, but don't be surprised if you shed a tear or two. It's sure to touch a tender spot in your cowboy soul. As an added treat the winners of the children's cowboy po - etry contest will be reading their prize-winning poems to start the festivities. Two libraries will have book sales in the next few weeks.
