By Michelle Faul The Associated Press LAGOS, NiGeriA » Suspected Muslim extremists kidnapped about 100 girls Tuesday from a school in northeastern Nige - ria, less than a day after mil- itants bombed a bus station and killed 75 people in the cap- ital — a surge of violence that raised new doubts about the military's ability to contain an Islamic uprising. With an 11-month-old state of emergency in three north - eastern states failing to bring relief, the attacks are increas- ing calls for President Good- luck Jonathan to rethink his strategy in confronting the biggest threat to the secu- rity of Africa's most popu- lous nation. The attacks by the Boko Haram terrorist network have killed more than 1,500 people in this year alone, compared with an estimated 3,600 dead between 2010 and 2014. In the latest attack, gun - men killed a soldier and a police officer guarding a school in Chibok on the edge of the Sambisa Forest and ab - ducted the teenage girls af- ter midnight, according to authorities. Some of the girls escaped by jumping off the open truck as it was moving slowly along a road, according to an official who spoke on condition of ano - nymity because he was not au- thorized to talk to reporters. Islamic extremists have been abducting girls to use as cooks and sex slaves. All schools in Borno state were closed three weeks ago because of stepped-up at - tacks that have killed hun- dreds of students in the past year. But the young women — aged between 16 and 18 — were recalled to take their final exams, a local govern - ment official said. Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden," has targeted schools, mosques, churches, villages and agricultural cen - ters in assaults that are in- creasingly indiscriminate. The insurgents have also made daring raids on mili- tary barracks and bases. The report of the abduc- tions came as officials were still dealing with the after- math of Monday's bombing at the Abuja bus station that killed 75 and wounded 141, just miles from Nigeria's seat of government. The attack also was blamed on Boko Haram. Last week, extremists staged their first reported attack in Jigawa state, to the west of the northeastern states where Boko Haram holds influence. They hit a po - lice station, a Shariah Islamic court and a bank, and killed seven police officers. Violence surges from Is la mi c up ri si ng i n Ni ge ri a By Margie Mason The Associated Press PerTH, AuSTrALiA » A ro- botic submarine looking for the lost Malaysian jet began its second mission Tuesday after cutting short its first because the ocean waters where it was sent were too deep, officials said. Monday's planned 16-hour search lasted just six and none of the data collected by the U.S. Navy's Bluefin 21 submarine offered clues to the whereabouts of the plane. The unmanned sub is programmed to hover 100 feet above the seabed, but it started searching atop a patch that was deeper than the sub's maximum operat - ing depth of 15,000 feet, the search coordination center and the U.S. Navy said. A built-in safety feature returned the Bluefin to the surface and it was not dam - aged, they said. The data collected by the sub was later analyzed and no sign of the missing plane was found, the U.S. Navy said. Crews shifted the search zone away from the deep - est water before sending the Bluefin back for Tuesday's mission, the U.S. Navy said. Search authorities had known the primary search area for Flight 370 was near the limit of the Bluefin's dive capabilities. Deeper-diving submersibles have been evaluated, but none is yet available to help. A safety margin would have been included in the Bluefin's program to pro - tect the device from harm if it went a bit deeper than its 4,500-meter limit, said Ste- fan Williams, a professor of marine robotics at the Uni- versity of Sydney. " M aybe some a rea s where they are doing the survey are a little bit deeper than they are expecting," he said. "They may not have very reliable prior data for the area." Meanwhile, officials were investigating an oil slick about 3.4 miles from the area where the last under - water sounds were detected. Crews collected an oil sample and sent it back to Perth in western Australia for analysis, a process that will take several days, said Angus Houston, the head of the joint agency coordinat - ing the search off Austra- lia's west coast. He said it does not appear to be from any of the ships in the area, but cautioned against jumping to conclu - sions about its source. The submarine is pro- grammed to take 24 hours to complete each mission: two hours to dive to the bot- tom, 16 hours to search the seafloor, two hours to re- turn to the surface, and four hours to upload the data. The Bluefin can create a three-dimensional sonar map of any debris on the ocean floor. But the search is more challenging in this area because the seabed is cov - ered in silt that could poten- tially cover part of the plane. "What they're going to have to be looking for is con - trast between hard objects, like bits of a fuselage, and that silty bottom," Williams said. "With the types of so - nars they are using, if stuff is sitting up on top of the silt, say a wing was there, you could likely see that ... but small items might sink down into the silt and be covered and then it's going to be a lot more challenging." The search moved be - low the surface after a U.S. Navy device towed by an Australian ship detected underwater sounds con - sistent with signals from an aircraft's black boxes, which record flight data and cockpit conversations. The devices emit "pings" so they can be more easily found, but their batteries last only about a month and are now believed to have failed. Australian Prime Min - ister Tony Abbott raised hopes last week when he said authorities were "very confident" the signals were from the black boxes on Flight 370, which disap - peared March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing with 239 people on board, mostly Chinese.
