A 6, 2011 TOWN OF QUARTZSITE ADOPTS SOCIAL HOST ORDINANCE Submitted by Samantha Hess Quartzsite Community Prevention Coalition (QCPC) Decreasing the number of underage adolescents who drink, and educating the community that it is not acceptable for teens to drink at home, are just a few examples that the Town of Quartz- site is trying to get across by passing the Social Host Ordinance. It has been brought to the town’s at- tention, not only from personal wit- nesses, but also from Arizona’s youth survey that a lot of the underage drink- ing is occurring within the home. This ordinance states that anyone permit- ting or encouraging underage drinking will be held accountable. Also, anyone failing to take appropriate actions to prevent the consumption of alcohol on their personal premises to underage teens, will also be held accountable and will face consequences. The penalty regarding the ordinance is a class I misdemeanor. Keep in mind that if one is allowing the underage to drink on their property, and they are caught, they may be charged with a count against them for every underage person that is there. It has been proven by scientifi c re- search that persons under the age of 21 suffer bodily consequences from .DM. drinking. The human brain is not fully developed until the age of 21, there- fore drinking before this time stunts the brains growth and does not allow it to develop to its full potential. This is one of the reasons it is so important for us as a community to halt underage drinking. Quartzsite is not the only community working to pass this ordinance. La Paz County has recently passed it, and Tuc- son passed this ordinance a few years ago. The plan is, by passing this ordi- nance we can hopefully see a decrease in numbers of underage teens drink- ing & also to educate parents/fam- ily friends/young adults that drinking even at home does not make it appro- priate, and hopefully people realize this and don’t let it continue to occur. QCPC meets the third Thursday of the month at 10am at the Quartzsite Fire Station. Arizona Community Health Care To all my loyal patients, It is with great regret that I must inform you that I will be clos- ing Arizona Community Health Care effective April 9, 2011. It has been my pleasure to serve you and the entire Quartzsite area over the past 3 years. I have been trying to recruit another provider since I started the practice, but I have been unable to do so. I have enjoyed my time in Quartzsite but I am unable to continue a practice in two locations that are 120 miles apart. In an attempt to make this transition as seamless as possible, a copy of your records will be available to you until April 26, 2011. Please contact Sally at our offi ce, 928-927-4226 to make this request. After that time, you will need to contact 623-583-5032. I will refi ll appropriate prescriptions until April 26, 2011.
