I too, at times, have felt a great hate for those that have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do. But hate wears you down, and does not hurt your enemy. It is like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings many times.” He continued, “It is as if there are two wolves inside me. One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him, and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fi ght when it is right to do so, and in the right way. But the other wolf, ah! He is full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a fi t of temper. He fi ghts everyone, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, for his anger will change nothing. Sometimes, it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit.” The boy looked intently into his Grandfather’s eyes and asked, “Which one wins, Grandfather?” The Grandfather smiled and quietly said, “The one I feed.” A 6, 2011 Editorial BY SHANANA “RAIN” GOLDEN-BEAR The phrase, “Attitude of Gratitude” is often heard in many circles in our society. We live a society that focuses on mate- rialism and individuality. By comparing ourselves to others and focusing on what we lack we experience an attitude of greed and envy. Science shows that that people who keep a gratitude journal report having more energy, improved mood, more life satisfaction, and are more supportive to others. Having gratitude helps us focus on the good things we have, and not on what we lack. Here in Quartzsite, we have many op- portunities to be grateful. It’s spring and the sun is shining. Some folks like to focus on the negative and how bad things are. Others work on solutions, giving their time and talents to help those in the community. Small town politics is small town poli- tics, no matter where you travel. The more attention we give to the negative, the more it is fed. The power of our community to come together and support each other is beyond comprehension! Our churches share their generosity, our volunteers donate hours to local organizations, our elders share their wisdom, and our youth express their enthusiasm. The question remains, which wolf are we going to feed?
