P 4 SALVATION ARMY MOVING The Salvation Army is not leaving Quartzsite, although there have been numerous stories around town. They are just not true. The lease was up on the building .DM. THE PEOPLE’S VOICE presently occupied by them and they were willing to sign a new one but the owner of the building refused to let them stay where they have been for so many years. The Salvation Army in Quartzsite has been headed up by Carol Kelly for the past year along with some very faithful volunteers. None of us know why the Salvation Army made the changes they did at that time but the person in charge for many years was relieved by them and Carol was asked to take over. She has done a remarkable job. All monies donated in Quartzsite stays in Quartzsite, and has helped many people. I am very proud to be a volunteer and this is shared with many other lovely people who give their time every week to this worthy organization. They will be opening on a limited schedule on the 16th of February and will be in full operation by September. Donations are being accepted at 101 Moon Mountain Road. I found. “Voters of Quartzsite don’t be con- fused by the untruths in the yellow sheet published by the seekers of de- struction. The publication is designed to play with your minds and conceal their real intent. This election needs your full attention. Study the issues ask questions of people who know the real issues and answers. Attend the next Town Hall meeting and see a real administration at work and inaction.” I was curious about the referral of “yel- low sheet” and I looked it up and found Yellow Journalism “exploit, distort, or exaggerates the news to create sensa- tions”. My hope is that the person who wrote on the envelope will came forward. Sincerely, Carolyn Guthrie Quartzsite Leah Ziebach Quartzsite VOTERS OF QUARTZSITE I found this written on an envelope at the post office. I was amazed how ugly Quartzsite ru- mors start. Not anymore. A Doctor’s office on Joshua Street was phoned by an opposition candidate, Jennifer Harris-Jones, aka “Jade”. She told the Doctor’s Assistant she received a Town letter on wrong zoning of busi- nesses (while she hinted she had to get back to her dog-grooming business). “Jade” stated the Doctor’s office was illegal since he doesn’t have a zoning permit. She also said she was calling every business telling them they were HOLLYWOOD PETS Mobile Grooming Professionally groomed by Robin Barbour Award winning groomer! 22 years experience! When asked, “Jade” couldn’t fax this so-called letter at that time. This incident has been verified by the Doctor’s Office. How do we react to this? The Doctor has a “Conditional Use” Permit. As a medical office, he is permitted and is official, no ifs, ands, or buts. “Jade” does not have a Conditional Use Per- mit on her ‘rented trailer space’ of a zoned Light Industrial, period. So, let’s think. She must be fighting the Town because she doesn’t (or won’t) follow regulations. Here is a person (and the rest of the opposition candidates) who stop at nothing to create havoc, incite discon- tent to get elected. Do we have debt? Yes, all Towns have debt. Quartzsite has a debt created over 11 years and is making proper scheduled payments (like mortgage payments). These pay- ments were built into the Town Budget and Quartzsite has been under Budget for the 2nd year in a row. Not many towns, states, or countries are UNDER budget, but we are. Not bad! Please see in your hearts and minds keeping our present Council going, they are on the right path. Quartzsite IS making progress. Quartzsite DOES matter!! Please VOTE! Violet Kiss A Proud Quartzsite Year-round Resident THICK VEIL OF IGNORANCE After a supreme effort I managed to struggle through the February 1st issue F 16, 2011 of “The Desert Freedom Press”, I’ve concluded it is fundamentally identical to the previous political broadside, “The Gem”; only nastier and more prone to disinformation. The central theme of the opposition candidates appears to be that the Town spends too much money. Since they don’t specify what exactly we are spend- ing too much money on, I gather they mean anything and everything. They posit we are as fiscally irresponsible as our Federal Government. I disagree. We don’t start our day by deciding whether to do the job we were elected for or to attend a fundraiser for our reelection (and you wonder why nothing seems to get done). I concede that local and federal Governments share something in common; among them that they both receive and spend the public’s money. Taxes and other fees are not a pun- ishment. They are among the ways in which we pay for public services such as our Police and Fire Departments; our water and sewer, our schools and other things we truly need. This contributes to making our County and our Town a pretty good place to live, and this in turn allows all of us to look after those less fortunate among us. So how much money is too much? The Council spends your money frequently augmented by Federal and State grants – on the things we need, not on the things we want. I want a new Town Hall with a Starbuck’s in the lobby, but I guess I’ll have to settle for an upgraded sewer reclamation Plant. The opposition ap- parently views all of this through a thick veil of ignorance. Augmented by their dependence upon false and malicious charges. Joe Winslow Quartzsite  SEE LETTERS ON PAGE 7
