At the river it was transferred to river freighters and then again transferred to ships on the Gulf of California for shipment to Swansea Wales via Cape Horn. In 1909, the town became an active mining town of about seven hundred people with a post offi ce, rooms to rent, saloons, a movie house, general store, lumber company, barber, auto dealer, and its own power and light company. Unfortunately the investors in the mine did not see a return on their substantial investment and in 1911 were forced to declare bankruptcy. In 1915 new owners acquired the mine. The new owners hired Earnest Lane to use his vast mining and business knowledge to improve the mining operation. The mine showed a profi t under Lane until October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday, causing the price of copper to drop dramatically, thus ending the last full-scale effort to make Swansea the great mining success that so many had pinned their hopes in the past. (The next story will be: “The Cinnabar Mine”) ADOT joins with Arizona, country in recognizing military service Honored through specialty license plates and highway memorials PHOENIX- As part of our commitment to service and public safety, the Ari- zona Department of Transportation is joining with the citizens of Arizona and the country to recognize the efforts of our active duty and veteran members of the United States military. ADOT, in partnership with various governmental agencies and nonprofi t organizations, has erected monuments throughout the state to recognize the contributions of veterans, both past and present. Many of the monuments date back to the 1800s. One example is the dedication of the Blue Star Memorial Highway, which is designated on several segments of Arizona’s public highways. These dedicated highway sections are a tribute to the service members in the Armed Forces who have defended the United States. The segments are located in Yuma County along Business Route 8, Business Route 19 in Santa Cruz and Pima counties, and near milepost 612 on US 89A in Coconino County. More recently, ADOT transferred ownership of the Veterans Bronze Memorial Plaque to the City of Prescott. The plaque was originally located on an obelisk near the junction of State Routes 69 and 89 and dedicated by the Arizona State Highway Commission in July 1954. The plaque is a tribute to the courage and sacrifi ce of all veterans who served this country in foreign wars. In September 2010, a new obelisk was built by community volunteers with materials supplied by ADOT. The plaque was reinstalled in Veterans Memorial Island Park on the corner of Gurley and Sheldon streets in Prescott. ADOT also provided and in- stalled a second plaque that honors all of the United States Armed Services. The fl ags at the McGuireville Veterans Memorial were raised once again in October 2010 with the reopening of the rest area. One of the features of the rest area, as noted in many travel destination magazines, is the Veterans Memorial. The memorial consists of a pole with raised fl ags to designate the area of the rest stop that is dedicated to the veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
