F������� 16, 2011 Local student honored The Arizona Educational Foundation recognized the nine winning students of the 2011 Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest at the Statehood Day Cer- emony, Monday, Feb. 14th at noon in the Historic Senate Chamber. One of the winners is from Quartzsite who at- tends The Scholars’ Academy. The fol- lowing student will be recognized: 9th & 10th Grade Category: Honorable Mention: Kailey Silvia, The Scholars’ Academy, Quartzsite The topic in which students were asked to write about was: “Sustainable Com- munities: What That Means to Me and to Arizona.” The winners are: 7th & 8th Grade Category: 1st Place: Kaitlyn O’Nan, Center for Educational Excellence, Tempe 2nd Place: Holley Biringer, Oakwood Elementary School, Peoria 3rd Place: Destiny Brooke, Center for Educational Excellence, Tempe 9th & 10th Grade Category: 1st Place: Alexis Smiley, Poston Butte High School, San Tan Valley 2nd Place: Kelly Stockdell, Chaparral High School, Scottsdale 3rd Place: Allie Steele, Foothills Acad- emy College Preparatory, Scottsdale Honorable Mention: Kailey Silvia, The Scholars’ Academy, Quartzsite Honorable Mention: Kanisha Twitty, Poston Butte High School, San Tan Valley 11th & 12th Grade Category: 1st Place: Alyssa Tilley, Coronado High School, Scottsdale 2nd Place: Jaqueline Horrigan, Coro- nado High School, Scottsdale 3rd Place: James Regione, Poston Butte High School, San Tan Valley Honorable Mention: Cameron Marti- nelli, Poston Butte High School, San Tan Valley Former schoolteacher and state leg- islator Polly Rosenbaum, a strong advocate for education, started the Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest. The Arizona Educational Foundation and APS sponsor the contest named in Ms. Rosenbaum’s honor.
