By Elmer London Amateur Radio Operators have been gathering in this area for several years. Beginning with Good Sam RV- ers meeting in the Cloud’s area east of where Sweet Darlene’s is now lo- cated. When that area was developed, the Quartzfest eventually changed to its present location at milepost 99 on Highway 95 near the La Paz Valley in- tersection, mainly through the efforts of the Escapees RV group. Such gatherings have been called Hamfests as Amateur Radio Opera- tors are informally called “Hams”. The Hamfest, here, has become a kind of anomaly unto itself. Because of the popularity of Quartzsite, it is now called “Quartzfest” and has a website www.Quartzfest.org. This year’s 2011 Quartzfest seems $75,000 BETTY HUNTER, INC. REALTOR www. There are 335 people registered and 189 RVs parked on site with many more parked elsewhere as well as hams who winter here that participate. The dates for this year’s Quartzfest was from Jan. 23rd thru 29th. Throughout the week there were many workshops for radio related ac- tivities including certifi cation testing for new Hams and upgrading licenses. Every evening there was great enter- tainment. There were many nationally known Hams in attendance includ- ing Gordon West, from California. On Friday and Saturday, there was a yard sale with lots of radio gear and other electronics as well as crafts. On behalf of Amateur Radio Opera- tors and the Quartzfest Directors Steve and Lynda Weed (also Hams) I would like to thank the Town of Quartzsite for its recognition of the needs of Quartz- fest, both present and past. Thanks especially to Offi cer Jim Schultz who answered questions re- garding Quartzsite Law Enforcement at the opening ceremony Sunday eve- ning. Jim is a “Ham” in his own right! I’d like to thank Council Member An- derson for arranging for Skip Gallup to be there from Search and Rescue. Thank you Skip for your helpful infor- mation on desert safety.
