What love we fail to give, will be lost for all eternity.” -Leo Buscaglia Quartzsite in January! Try to explain it to someone who has not experienced it, and you may sound a bit silly! To Rosallee O. Wheeler, Quartzsite was home, even though she left a few years back to live with her daughter. She loved the quirkiness of this town and the wonderful people that live and visit each year. Even in our loss of her physical presence, she will remain a driving force for many in Quartzsite through her guiding spirit. She will be missed by many. The gifts of many of our elders are shared sometimes just around the campfire, in those quiet moments drinking coffee together while watching the sunset, or meeting at a favorite local cafe or wondering the vendors. When we lose an elder, we are re- minded of our limited time on earth. This past week, I witnessed many fi rst time visitors to Quartzsite with that ex- pression of awe in their faces. I saw that simple amazement of what this town has to offer. This is the Quartzsite that many complain is not here any longer. It was here all along. Those of us that are so busy working long hours sometimes forget to enjoy the moment. We get caught up in the hectic day to day grind of deadlines, “he said, she said” rumors, the daily chores, fi ghting for a dryer in the laundromat, etc. that we just forget to take in the beauty that surrounds us. The beauty never went away. Just as the amazement of Quartzsite never left. It is all a matter of perception. F 2, 2011 Editorial BY SHANANA “RAIN” GOLDEN-BEAR Visiting with vendors is the best part of my “job”! Perception is evident in talk- ing with the different vendors. Some are so excited to be here, and others complain how bad it always is. Folks are folks. However, facts are facts. FACT: Vendor permits are up around 200 over this time last year! FACT: The Town of Quartzsite Town Council created a new Vendor, Swap Meet, RV Parks Municipal Board to bridge the gap between vendors. FACT: Quartzsite Town Council have said over and over they don’t want to run the vendors out of town. FACT: Some vendors are happy. FACT: Some vendors are not. FACT: Some people are happy. FACT: Some people are not. My elders said we can’t please everyone, but when we are happy, it’s easier to be fi nd happy people. With the traffi c this season like no other recent years, it was a bit of a challenge to maneuver around town. Getting stuck in 4 lanes of traffi c while trying to run a paper, creates many challenges. How was I going to “per- ceive” this situation? I chose to be thank ful for the tourism and happy I have a smart phone! To those vendors who are happy, please share that when you travel the country during the summer. Those who are sad, we encourage you to promote Quartzsite so you can be happier! And take a moment to enjoy the quirkiness of Quartzsite, as Rosalee did.
