Page 8 Historic Englewood Guide 2022 PHOTO COURTESY OF DIANA HARRIS Top: In 1955, Minnie Pearson and her new partner Edgar Van Norman built a new bait house across the street from her old one at the foot of the old wooden bridge across Lemon Bay. The bridge was replaced by the Tom Adams Bridge, but the bait store is still there and operating. Photo circa 1950. PHOTO COURTESY OF DIANA HARRIS Right: "Brandy" Brandenburg and his staff stand in front of his new store on West Dearborn Street in 1955. "Well, it was just like a circus coming to town," said one Englewood resident, "when Brandy opened that (5-and-10-cent) store. He brought so many things to Englewood that we hadn't been able to get here. You know, before Brandy came, we had to go to Sarasota and Venice or Punta Gorda to shop. Not every- body had cars in those days, like they do now, so it wasn't easy. We was real excited about his store opening."
