Clark had traveled to the Middle East as a Fulbright Scholar, and during her studies collected hundreds of specimens in and around the Red Sea. Her travels and work were the basis for "Lady with a Spear," first published in 1953. Anne Vanderbilt read the book and loved it, Clark told Greg Martin, then a reporter for the Charlotte Sun, which is now The Daily Sun. Anne was married to Bill Vanderbilt, a great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, and co-owner of the 35,000-acre Two V Ranch. The property consisted of what is now most of Cape Haze, Rotonda West and Englewood East. "Wouldn't it be interesting to hear Clark give a lecture?" Anne asked Bill, according to Clark. At the Vanderbilts' invita- tion, Clark gave the lecture at an Englewood elementary school. "It was so overcrowded, the people were outside the windows looking in," Clark recalled. "The interest — es- pecially from the fishermen — was so strong, the Vanderbilts said, 'Couldn't you start a lab here?'" Clark said the Vanderbilts built a tiny building and funded the lab with a $10,000 budget in 1955. Soon, local fishermen were bringing her "all kinds of unusual things" caught in the bay for her to study. 'Lady with a Spear' arrives in Cape Haze Eugenie Clark's 1953 book "Lady With a Spear."
