Lemon Bay Fisheries was once the area's largest employer and the only place in town you could acquire ice. The Andersons were always generous in donating ice to any group, such as the Scouts, who were having a party or making ice cream. Photo circa 1930. Brian returned to Englewood after graduating University of South Florida in 2008 and working for a large corporation. In the photo, both are holding the Englewood Legends award that reads, "Honoring Our Past — Celebrating Our Present — Embracing Our Future." The pair received the 2022 award for their fam- ily, the Andersons, at the annual Smoked Mullet Award luncheon at The Waverly restaurant on Manasota Key in June. The Legends Award is given to histori- cal families who helped found Englewood. ENGLEWOOD LEGEND Pope's great-grandfather, Joseph "Jody" Daniel Anderson, was born in Georgia in 1867, but came with his family to a settlement around Sarasota Bay a short time later. When he was 16, he became head of this household. He decided to move his family — his mother, Sarah, his sister, Lulu, and his brother, Lee — further south and was granted a 159.5-acre homestead off Forked Creek in what would become the northern portion of Englewood. The homestead certificate was signed by President Grover Cleveland. That's where the Anderson Family established itself in Englewood. Pope, 73, said her great-grandfather did a magnificent job establishing a life and a family in Englewood. Continued on Page 22
