IT IS HOME. TM The home-like feel of Heritage Oaks Assisted Living & Memory Care creates a comfortable environment where residents are free to explore their interests through an array of daily activities and social events. PHOTO BY WOODY THAYER. Pioneers Days events have really run the gamut this past 60 years. You name it, it has probably happened at a Pioneers Days, one year or another. Boat races, Vaudeville acts, beard contests, crawling baby races, crazy hat contests, street dances, swimming events, cardboard boat races, water ski shows, decorated boat parades, fashion shows, dog shows, fishing contests, donkey baseball, the zany shipwreck dances and, of course, the ever popular parades. And that's just naming a few of the highlights. This photo is from the first Pioneers Days, a pie-eating contest without forks or spoons only using your hands. PHOTO PROVIDED BY DIANA HARRIS When "Wild Bill" The Snakeman came to town to display his rattlesnake friends on West Dearborn Street, he always drew a small crowd. This photo was taken in the 1950s by Woody Thayer.
