Page 24 Historic Englewood Guide 2022 By ELAINE ALLEN-EMRICH STAFF WRITER Few people have black-and- white photos on the walls of their business showcasing their ancestors who made history in Englewood. But Carolyn Pope does. Walking into the Pope Insurance office at 773 S. Indiana Ave. is like taking a trip back in time. Several old photos tell the story of Pope's great-grandpa, Englewood pioneer Joseph "Jody" Anderson and his family and friends. One shows them taking a coffee break after a long day of fishing. Another shows the Lemon Bay Seafood Market. In the conference room is a photo of Lemon Bay Fisheries, built in 1935 at the end of Wentworth Avenue. In its heyday, the fishery — built by Clayton Wiggins, Jesse Lampp and Stuart Anderson — was known from Atlanta to New York for the grouper, mullet, clams and scallops it provided. Fishermen unloaded 40,000 pounds of mullet at one time and 15 grouper boats lined up with fish. There is a framed newspa- per clipping, showing flames shooting out of the old fish house as Englewood Volunteer Fire Department uses the va- cant structure for fire training purposes, long after the fishery was out of use. In the hallway of Pope Insurance is a large, framed poster of Jody Anderson's boat, The Francis M., featured in Englewood's first Pioneer Day's Boat Parade. On the shelf in one of the offices, is an original Englewood Bank checkbook from Lemon Bay Fisheries. The customized business checks have a graphic of a boat and a fish on each of them. The checks don't have standard routing or account numbers at the bottom like today's checks. Inside another office is a recent photo of Carolyn Pope and her son, Brian. The 2003 Lemon Bay High alumnus is a sixth-generation Englewood resident and second genera- tion at Pope Insurance.
