Page 4 Historic Englewood Guide 2022 T he catchy phrase, "The Nifty Fifties," was a Wall Street term originally used to describe hot stocks in the 1950s. Looking back it surely applies to that same '50s era in Englewood. It was as if the 20th century had suddenly discov- ered the small, isolated commu- nity. New busi- nesses opened and long overdue amenities became available. In just a handful of years, Englewood saw the emergence of such things as a newspaper, a dentist, a bank, a 5 & 10 store, an outboard motor repair shop, a new church structure, a modern Post Office, Little League baseball. The Vanderbilt family arrived and purchased as much as 35,000 acres of land on the Cape Haze Peninsula. They built the Two V Ranch, founded and funded the Cape Haze Lab and, seeing the sad state of the school, gave to the Englewood Elementary School a grant of $200,000. And we certainly mustn't forget the arrival of Pioneer Days in the '50s commemorating the 70th anniversary of Englewood and bringing with it such great enter- tainment that continues till today. This year's "Back to the Future" theme is right on the spot. An almost new Englewood was emerging in the 1950s. Jobs and businesses were different, the town was even looking different as wood- en housing was being replaced by more concrete block houses. We hope you will enjoy our annual historical section high- lighting an important period in Englewood's history. We are pleased to give a special tribute to Dr. Eugenie Clark, an earlier Englewood resident, and the Cape Haze Lab. We're also featuring this year's Legacy Award winners, the Anderson Family, represented by Carolyn Pope and Brian Pope. And please join us in a big welcome back to the return of Pioneers Days and the parade. Englewood's Nifty Fifties PHOTO PROVIDED BY MOTE Eugenie Clark with a shark.
