ANDERSON FAMILY BOOK At the 2022 Smoked Mullet luncheon, Pope displayed the book written by Dr. Oscar Emmett Anderson about his father, called "Life and Recollections of Joseph Daniel Anderson." The book has old photos of the family and friends. It's on sale at the Lemon Bay Historical Society and other places around town. The book chronicles early life in Englewood, which included un- limited hours of working on the fishing docks. Her uncle Stuart helped build the Englewood Fishery at the end of Wentworth Street. During the Great Depression, it helped fishermen earn a living. Sales of the fish they caught brought sorely needed cash to the community. He also built a cooker for mullet, a plentiful fish in Lemon Bay that locals caught, ate and sold. "My uncle Stuart was the absolute master of preparing mullet in that way," she said. "My mouth waters even now thinking about that good food." At his father's funeral, Emmett Anderson (1867-1939) said, "Thus ended the life of a giant of a man, the first pioneer and resident of Pinedale/ Manasota area … From this stalwart pioneering youth came the children and their offspring which were to play major roles in many facets of society, business and professional leaders, public school teachers, college professors, scientists, lawyers, judges, physicians, artists and participants in the political arena in- cluding candidates for the highest offices lieutenant governor and governor." Emmett didn't mention there were insurance agents and business owners in future generations. Carolyn and Brian have been in the business for a long time. After teaching in Germany for a couple of years, Carolyn moved to Sarasota in 1977. She opened an office in Sarasota and then Venice. She later moved to Englewood and opened Pope Insurance. Her hus- band Larry coached softball at Lemon Bay High School. "The softball field at the high school is named after my dad," said Brian. "He stuck with it long after my sister Kristin graduated in 2001." In 1996, Sarasota County erected a historical plaque at Manasota Beach and the park was dedicated as Anderson Park. "There is fabulous information about my great-grandfather at Manasota Beach by the pavilion," Carolyn said. "I'm so proud. It's wonderful." Carolyn still lives in Englewood. When she's not at work, she loves spending time with her grandchildren. Email: elaine.allen@yoursun.com
