The Senior Center received a USDA Rural Development Grant of $28,200 with center matching funds of $23,094, which included the auto-transfer switch and necessary electrical work. The 60 kw generator will be used when the town loses power during the summer monsoon storms. The new generator will allow the Center to continue to offer local seniors a place to stay cool and to enjoy meals and social activities. The generator is integrated into the electrical system of the Senior Center. When there's an interruption of service, an automated system will signal the generator to start and supplying energy to the building. There's enough power to run the air conditioning and lights for the small hall, and keep the kitchen running. "Having the generator means we can continue to provide our regular services to our seniors during the summer when the power goes out," said Wayne Wilson, President. "The Quartzsite Senior Center wishes to express our appreciation to Rosemary Felix of Yuma U.S.D.A. and Debra Stewart of Phoenix U.S.D.A for working the past several years to get a grant for our generator," said Rita Wilson, Activities Director. "Thank you to Council member Carol Kelley, who originally applied for the grant about five years ago with Rosemary. Wayne Wilson continued the process with Rosemary. After Rosemary retired, Wayne began to work with Debra. As you can see, we finally have it. On December 20th, 2012 it was up and running. We wish to thank everyone who helped in the process."
