George was proud to share with us that he had been born in Quartzsite and lived here all his life, except for when he served in the 144th Infantry during World War I. His father, Antone Hagley had come to America from Galepinger Germany in 1884 with a plan to go out West. He got as far as Tyson's Well (later known as Quartzsite) and in 1893 built the Hagley Store and Antone's Hay & Grain. George's mother, Viktoria Kuehn had come to America from Oetighheim Germany in 1881, and soon after arrival became a widow with three young sons; William, Charles, and Fred. She traveled West to Tyson's Well, where her deceased husband's Uncle Mike owned the Tyson's Well Stage Stop. Here she later met and married Antone. George was born on November 8, 1894. Three years later a sister, Theresa joined the family and in 1899, Emelia was born. After George returned from the war, he homesteaded 80 acres in Quartzsite and helped his half-brother Fred with the family cattle business. Still not quite sure what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, he ran for a seat on the Yuma County Board of Supervisors, a position he held for five terms. In 1942 he married Osa Holden who had also grown up in Tyson's Well, but had moved to Redlands, California. The marriage was George's first and Osa's second. She missed citylife and her family and moved back to Redlands where she remained as Osa Holden Hagley. Judge Hagley's home located on Main St. & Moon Mtn. February 6, 2013 Food Handler Classes La Paz County Health Dept. provides Food Handler Classes in Quartzsite. The classes are held on Wednesdays. In December and January, the Department adds Friday classes to the schedule. Judge Hagley then announced, "Folks, you'll have to excuse me while I marry this young couple". The jury and spectators turned in their chairs to witness the wedding vows and clapped when the Judge pronounced the couple "man and wife". He rapped the gavel again announcing, "Court is now back in session". The case was heard and the offender sentenced. One reporter wrote, "There was a most unusual trial in Quartzsite today. Love took precedence over all. The Honorable Judge George Hagley decreed that court would just have to wait for love. And it did." WE'RE BACK! Looking forward to seeing our Friends! The volunteer board will be meeting the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7pm through March at Town Hall. The meetings are open to the public and vendors are invited to attend.
