They often ask who she was and why there is a plce named after her. So here is a brief history of the Gardens… Celia Ann Winer was born in 1986 in McMaster Neo Natal Unit in Hamilton, Ontario. At that time, she was Canada's smallest baby by birth weight (670 grams or 1 ¼ lbs.), as well as by gestation (23 ½ weeks). Her head was the size of a lemon, and she was only 12 inches long. Her chances of survival were next to nil. She spent the first five months of her life in an incubator, and by the time she reached her scheduled due date, she was only five pounds. But, she had a will to live that surprised the doctors and nurses, and she made it through all those months to finally come home. After travelling for several years with her parents (her dad, Paul, is an entertainer) across Canada, she spent a year living in New Hampshire, but ended up catching pneumonia during the damp winter months, so the family came out to Arizona because of her health. When she began school, they decided to settle in Quartzsite where they could sell in the swap meets all week and the new school had just opened. She loved school and the town she called home. She passed away in minutes. The Town of Quartzsite, residents, friends, snowbirds and vendors alike who knew her, rallied around the family and helped get them through this terrible loss. They started a fund to help with expenses and it was wonderful to see the whole community pull together in the face of such a loss. A year after her death, her parents wanted to give something back to the community that had opened their hearts to share their grief. They asked at the SEE GARDENS PAGE 15 La Casa Del Rancho M &A F EXICAN e om H of the F am MERICAN SOMBRERO! ou s OOD Join us for our Special Valentine's Day Dinner BREAKFAST - LUNCH - DINNER 7AM-7PM 70 N.
