La Cuna de Aztlan is a Native American organization whose mission is to protect and preserve sacred indigenous sites that are located along the Colorado River. Mr. Figueroa spoke regarding the federal government's "Fast Track" process of giving renewable energy projects priority status without proper communications with local tribes. Mr. Figueroa agrees with Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT) arguement that expediting the review and approval process for renewable energy projects undermines the time needed to take tribal concerns into consideration. CRIT Resolution #LNK-12-036, "Opposing the Department of Interior Fast-track Policies of Renewable Projects on Ancestral Homelands" was adopted in June, 2012 at the General Assembly of the National Congress of American Indians. CRIT wants better communications over the 40 proposed solar and wind renewable energy projects to be undertaken within a 50-mile radius of the Colorado River Indian Reservation. Last year CRIT launched a major attack on the Genesis Solar Energy Development Project (west of Blythe, Calif.) where Tribal Council Chairman Eldred Enas told Indian Country Today, "Tens of thousands of acres of land within the ancestral homelands of the CRIT people are being destroyed." As a federally-recognized tribal group with sovereignty over a 264,000-acre reservation, the Colorado tribes were offended that the BLM approved Genesis before holding "nation-to-nation" SEE ELDER PAGE 28 PUBLIC NOTICE Need Cash?
