For God, Gold, and Glory: The Coronado Expedition, 1540-1542 Speaker: Jim Turner Feb. 13 at 1:00p.m. In 1540, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado entered Arizona with the largest European expedition ever gathered in North America. Historians have puzzled over Coronado's exact route through Arizona. This program will allow audiences to virtually travel with the entourage through images by famous artists, maps, and scenic and historic photographs of the pueblos, cross bow dart points, and other archaeological remains from one of Coronado's campsites. Geronimo's Surrender: The 1886 C.S.Fly Photographs Speaker: Jay Van Orden Feb. 27 at 1:00 In March 1886, representatives of two warring nations met at Canon de los Embudos near the Arizona-Mexican border. The names and deeds of Geronimo and the Chiricahua Apaches, and of General George Crook and the U.S. Army, have long been recorded in history books. Most major publications, however, have presented a one-sided view of the event and inaccurately or incompletely identify participants. In this presentation, Van Orden re-examines both the historical accounts and the photographed records of the surrender talks, and discusses critical and missing information. Van Orden integrates the updated information to add new depth to the suspenseful days of negotiations. Augmented by information retrieved from both eyewitness accounts and consultations with descendants of the photographed Chiricahuas, his presentation adds new historical perspective to a riveting moment in history. All programs are held at the La Paz County Board of Supervisors Room, 1108 Joshua Ave., Parker. Everyone is welcome to these FREE programs, sponsored by the Parker Area Historical Society and the Parker Friends of the Library. These programs were also made possible in part by The Arizona Humanities Council. Refreshments provided by the Parker Historical Society.
