16 MARCH 9-15, 2016 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM The circus is being revamped. The classic Ameri- can pastime has a modern take with the premiere of The Big Top Out of the Box Circus. A perfect example of this new generation of performers is the illusion- ist Kid Ace who is touring with the show, which comes to the Crown on March 18. He entered the world of magic as many do, mysti- fied by a simple trick. "It started when I was 12. I was in the theatre acting when I was that age. Then my acting teacher showed me a magic trick where he made a handkerchief disappear. He put it in his hand, opened his hand and it was gone. After that I was hooked. I had to know how it was done so I learned how to do the trick," he explained. Though his love for the art started with a classic magic trick, he soon put his own spin on it. "I have a very modern style. It is high-energy music paired with some classic magic, but I put my own twist on it. It is focused on the youth culture and on our gen- eration. You can forget the magician with the tailcoat and top hat. You can forget the hokey look. I tap into the youth pop culture and it influences the way I dress, the music and how I move on stage," he says. Naturally, touring can be difficult. It takes a physi- cal toll and an emotional one. It is difficult to always be on the move. For Kid Ace however, it is also easy to keep his excitement up, despite missing loved ones. "I love inspiring people. I was inspired by live performances, so I remember that feeling as a kid So if I get to inspire just one person in the audience it is worth missing all of those Christmases, Easters and Thanksgivings," he said. "Even thought you are away from those that are closest to you. You are constantly meeting and connecting with new people. " Other notable acts include iLuminate, a group known for their performance on America's Got Tal- ent. The ringmaster is Carl Payne from the sitcom Martin. The performances are varied, but always exciting. "We all have different styles, but overall it is a really high-energy show. You don't want to miss it. It is interactive, exciting and not your typical circus. Everyone has their own style and they are all amaz- ingly talented." Perhaps what makes it the most exciting and electrifying is the excitement for the performers. Here they have the freedom to experiment and grow. The excitement for the performance is palpable. "My end goal is to inspire and for you to give your time to me to come see the show means more than everything. If I can just inspire one person in the audience then I'm fulfilled. We can't wait to give Fayetteville a gift. And overall we are just filled with such extreme excitement," Kid Ace said. The Big Top Out the Box Circus comes to town on March 18 at the Crown Coliseum.
