MARCH 9-15, 2016 UCW 15 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM It can be difficult introducing young children to the experience of live symphonies, but the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra's upcoming concert is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to enjoy a live concert. "Unlike a full symphony where we would have pieces 40-50 minutes long, these are all 5-15 minutes long. There is a lot of change in the music so it is better for those with shorter attention spans, and kids tend to have shorter attentions spans. They will recognize much of this music," Christine Kastner, the president and CEO of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, says. The concert takes place on March 12. As the name suggests, Lights, Camera, Symphony! will focus exclusively on music written for movies, many of them modern and popular. "We will be playing music from Frozen, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings series, and a compilation of Bond music called the Best of Bond," Kastner says, "The Youth Orchestra will perform on stage side by side with the symphony musicians. A student and a professional will share a stand, which is why we call it side by side. They will perform the waltz from Sleeping Beauty and the "Raiders March" from Raiders of the Lost Ark." For adults, the movie music from the older classic movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Bond compilation bring back fond memories. For Kastner, the "Sleeping Beauty Waltz" brings back memories of her daughter dancing around the living room. The experience can be very different for the younger generations. For kids seeing the familiar songs gives classic instruments a modern relevance. "It is a good way to introduce kids to the symphony. The younger kids will know the music from Frozen, but they don't have a picture in their heads of all the instruments that it takes to create this music. So they come here and see this and think to themselves 'Wow, this is how it's made,'" Kastner says. Another exciting aspect of this concert is the participation of the Youth Orchestra. They have been practicing since early January and will be playing alongside the professional musicians. There will be 64 adult musicians and 35 youth musicians performing. Next season will be a little different. This is the final season for longtime music conductor Fouad Fakhouri. The search is on for a new music director and so far 273 people from around the nation have applied. There is a selection committee in place, but next season the community will have the amazing opportunity to help decide who the next conductor will be for the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. Lights, Camera, Symphony! is on March 12 at Huff Concert Hall on Methodist University's campus. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m., but there is also a pre-concert talk beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the FSO "Music Nerd" and musicians. They are also offering an open rehearsal on March 11 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www. fayettevillesymphony.org or call 433.4690.
