Garden spokesperson Meg Suraci says t his year 's "Holiday Light s in t he Garden" w ill feat ure 300,000 light s to illuminate plant s and t rees. New t his year is a sy nchronized show of light s and music shimmering over t he Cy press Pond. At t ract ions and fest iv it ies include a mile- long st roll feat uring brilliant light displays, photos w it h Sant a, S'mores roast ing over t he f ire pit, f ree craf t s for children and holiday mov ies in t he Oranger y. The Garden Gif t Shop, brimming w it h wonderf ul holiday select ions, is open each evening. Ref reshment s and beverages are available for purchase f rom Mrs. Claus's K itchen. There is also a beer and w ine cash bar. The Garden is par t nering w it h t hree local non-prof it s t his year. On select night s, g uest s donat ing t he requested collect ion drive item w ill receive $3 of f an adult t icket . You might want to plan your v isit accordingly. Doors w ill open night ly at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 11–15, For t Bragg 's USO is t he benef iciar y. Take a bag of indiv idually w rapped candies. Dec. 16 –20, Fayet tev ille's Second Har vest Food Bank w ill benef it when you t ake a canned food item. Dec. 21–23, The Child Advocac y Center is ask ing for school supplies or indiv idual snack size bags of animal crackers. In 1989, a few local cit izens believed t hat t he communit y should have a bot anical garden of it s ow n. Bruce Williams, t he late Mar t ha Duell and Roger Mercer came toget her and est ablished Friends of t he Bot anical Garden. The garden was conceived at Duell's k itchen t able and made public in Mercer 's newspaper gardening column. Dozens of commit ted suppor ters and volunteers joined t he cause. Through t he perseverance of t hese founders, t he Friends of t he Bot anical Garden were able to lease what was Pope Park of f N. Eastern Boulevard, which was ow ned by t he cit y. A lot of hard work and sacrif ice by all involved followed. Since t hen, t he Cape Fear Bot anical Garden has f lourished. More t han 25 years later, t he garden encompasses 80 acres of pine and hardwood forest, and boast s met iculously preser ved nat ural areas of t he region's indigenous plant s, t rees and w ildlife. The cult ivated garden areas showcase more t han 2,000 variet ies of ornament al plant s, and include special daylily, camellia and host a gardens. The R iver Walk, Herit age Garden, Children's Garden and But terf ly St roll prov ide unique educat ional experiences for young and old. The mult i-million dollar Wyat t Visitors Pav ilion Complex opened in April 2011.
