10 SEPTEMBER 14-20, 2016 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Best Play/Musical The Wiz Cape Fear Regional 1209 Hay Street Tickets 910.323.4233 Business: 910. 323.4234 or www.cfrt.org There is no doubt that every show you see on stage at the Cape Fear Regional Theatre is going to be well worth the price of the ticket. The CFRT has made its name of pulling great casts together to tell great stories, and they do it quite well. Last season was filled with hit after hit, but the show that stole the commu- nity's heart was The Wiz. In this updated tale, Dorothy dances and sings her way to Oz. Yes, the Scare Crow is by her side, as is the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. And the witches, well, they are evil, but boy can they sing. Made famous by Michael Jackson in the 1980s, this soulful telling of L. Frank Baum's story appeared to have a cast of thousands, and the local Fayetteville munchkins who rounded out the show came close to stealing the show. If you missed it, it will probably be awhile before The Wiz eases back into the CFRT, but if you were lucky enough to catch the show, you know that there really is no place like home. Best Art Gallery The Arts Council 301 Hay Street 910.323.1776 or www.theartscouncil.com The Fayetteville Arts Council is another anchor to downtown. The Arts Council is central gathering place for members of the community. It is a place where ideas and art abounds and where the possible is always explored. The Arts Council started 4th Friday in the last '90s to bring people downtown, but more importantly to bring art to the people in a manner that not only enter- tained, but also educated. For almost 20 years, 4th Friday has been the destina- tion for Fayetteville families and friends to gather to while away the evening, looking at, hearing, watching and listen- ing to art of every kind and flavor. Each month, the Arts Council opens its galleries to different artists, giving them a venue to showcase their works and to tell their stories. From world-renowned artists to local artists who get a shot to hang something in the gallery, the Arts Council opens its doors to let art live and breathe. Along with its gallery space, the Arts Council also is the center of arts funding in the community. Grants are available to artists and arts institutions like the Cape Fear Regional Theatre, The Fayetteville Symphony and countless other arts organizations. Additionally, the Arts Council funds artists in schools so that our community's children can have a chance to not only study art, but to touch it and create it. The Arts Council is the heartbeat of art in our community, so it seems only fitting that it was voted the Best Art Gallery.
