8 SEPTEMBER 14-20, 2016 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Best Local Non-Profit The Child Advocacy Center 336 Ray Avenue 910.486. 9700 or www.childadvocacycenter.com Children are truly the heart of a community. They are its future. How they are treated and how the community looks out for its children says more about a community than anything else. If you truly want to know the heart of a community, you can see it in the way they treat those who cannot take care of themselves. In Cumberland County, The Child Advocacy Center plays a key role in promoting the well being of the county's children. The organization's mission is "to alleviate the trauma chil- dren experience once a disclosure of sexual abuse or serious physical abuse occurs by creating a community of collaborating advocates." It's mission is to build "a community where children live in a safe and nurturing environment free from sexual and physical abuse." For that to happen the community has to come together, and pulling all the right people and resources together is the mission of the organization: Joining hands with community partners, we pro- vide a safe and child friendly Center that supports the prevention, investigation and prosecution of child abuse." The CAC is doing its job well. During FY 2016, our center served 773 children and their families and, by our coordinating efforts, saved the community more than $500,000.
