6 SEPTEMBER 14-20, 2016 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM CITY LIFE CITY LIFE Best Thing to Show Off/Best Museum Airborne and Special Operations Museum 100 Bragg Boulevard 910.643.2766 or www.asomf.org If you lived in Fayetteville in the late 1990s, you remember what the corner of Hay Street looked like. It was far from the architectural treasure it is today. Instead of the soaring roof line of the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, there was a row of dark clubs that had names like the 7 Dwarves and the Pump House. It was the place you made sure you avoided when company came calling. But that was another lifetime ago, today, the corner of Hay and Bragg celebrates the rich history of our community and the heroes who have called it home. For more than 80 years Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, Cumberland County and North Carolina have been synonymous with patriotism, duty and courage. The Airborne & Special Operations Museum stands testament to the teamwork, sacrifice and courage of our military men and women and the community they call home. As the centerpiece and main attraction of Historic Downtown Fayetteville, the ASOM welcomes thousands of guest each year. They are awed by its beautiful architecture, but they get swept up in the proud history of our U.S. Army paratroopers and special operators. Visiting the museum never gets old. Not only does the museum show- case the history of the airborne and special operations, it also pre- serves it. You can see everything from one of the Black Hawks downed in Somalia to a flag made by prisoners of war for the officer who freed them. It serves to not only honor, but save the unique history of our fighting men and women. Inside, you and your visitors from out of town cannot not only look at history, you can also hear about it firsthand from the many volunteers who spend their time at the museum. World War II veterans proudly tell of battles of legends, of flights over enemy friends and of friends gone too soon. We promise your visitors will leave amazed and impressed, and, as is the case with many, they will humbled by the selfless devotion to country and brothers that is the unique fabric of museum. According to our readers, the ASOM truly is The Best Museum and The Best Thing to Show Off to visitors and guests who visit the Fayetteville community.
