Why do Hospitals have Hospitalists? Years ago, when you entered the hospital, your family doctor came to see you. Today, it would most likely be a hospitalist who cared for you. Why the change? Patients today are admitted only for serious illnesses and injuries and they stay for shorter times. We now know it's better for patients to recover in their own home away from antibiotic-resistant bacteria that may live in the hospital environment. The term hospitalist may be foreign to you, but it has been around since 1996. Hospitalists are board-certified internal medicine or family practice physicians who specialize in hospital care. There are advantages to having hospitalists care for patients in the hospital. They have more expertise in caring for complicated hospitalized patients on a daily basis. And they are available 24 hours a day to meet with family members, follow up on tests, answer nurses' questions and deal with changes in the patient's condition. Hospitalists are experts in the care of patients in the hospital. At Cape Fear Valley, we'll put that expertise to work for you.
