An adoption awareness event will be held Nov. 8 at Grace Baptist Church, 3901 Raeford Rd., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are more than 800 children in DSS care in Cumberland County, according to Susan Graham, a social worker and foster parent recruiter at DSS. To become a foster or adoptive parent, you must: • Be age 21 or older • Be self-sustaining • Have room • Submit to a criminal background check and fingerprinting. For more information, call 910-677-2541. co.cumberland.nc.us November Is Adoption Awareness Month County Offices Closed Veterans Day Nov. 11 Cumberland County Government offices will be closed for Veterans Day on Nov. 11. This includes all Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center locations; the Animal Control Shelter, the Ann Street Landfill, Wilkes Road Yard Waste Facility and all Solid Waste Management container sites and recycling centers. If you wish to return any library materials, please use the book drops located outside all library branches. Items may be renewed on the library website at cumberland.lib.nc.us or by calling 910- 223-0431. The Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center will host the reading and discussion program "Voices of Latin American and Latino Literature" through Dec. 2 at the Pate Room, located in Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane. The discussion series, led by regional scholars, will focus on books by Latin American and Latino writers. Library Hosts Book Discussion Series Solid Waste Offers Yard Debris Options As the autumn season advances, many people will be raking leaves and cleaning their yards of debris. Cumberland County Solid Waste offers solutions for citizens who need to dispose of yard waste properly. The Wilkes Road Treatment and Processing Facility, located at 771 Wilkes Rd., Fayetteville, accepts yard waste to include small tree limbs, straw, leaves, hedge clippings and grass. The facility accepts clean wood and small tree stumps for a fee. The facility is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Homeowners are allowed four cubic yards of yard debris a week for free. Wood is charged $1.85 per pound, per 100 pounds, or $37 per ton. Tree stumps are $1.85 per pounds up to 540 pounds. Remember that large tree stumps, painted or treated wood, paneling, plywood and particle board must go to the Ann Street Landfill, located at 698 Ann St., Fayetteville.
