APRIL 2-8, 2014 UCW 9 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Methodist University's Spring Festival Chorus and The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra present Anton Bruckner's "Te Deum" on Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m., at Huff Concert Hall on the campus of Methodist University. "This is the concert that we do every year with The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra," said Dr. Michael Martin, associate professor of music education and director of choral activities at Methodist University. "It is probably one of Bruckner's most important choral works from when he was working in Vienna. It lasts approximately 25 minutes." Martin added that Bruckner was a very good choral writer and the piece has a lot of his personality. He had a lot of individuality and an intense religious commitment to what he was writing in this particular piece. Bruckner dedicated the piece "to God in gratitude for having me safely brought me through so much anguish in Vienna." Bruckner, an Austrian composer, was considered to be a very simple man and an extremely gifted writer of music. "He would listen to his critics and the people around him," said Martin. "If people did not like something he would change it." Martin added that "... people called it the Bruckner's problem and it was hard to find an established work that people would say that 'this is the arrangement you must do' because there are so many editions of it." The program will also include Berlioz's "Le Corsaire Overture" and will culminate with Brahms' "Symphony No. 2." "Next year we will be taking the year off and then we will be coming back in two years," said Martin. "We are going to try and do it every two years rather than every year starting in this sequence." The chorus has more than 100 voices and Martin would love to recruit more. "We invite singers from anywhere in Fayetteville to sing with us," said Martin. "We let people know that they are invited to come and sing this particularly large work with us." Martin added that the Cumberland Oratorio Singers combine with his chorus at Methodist University for this event and they are known as the Spring Festival Chorus. The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1956 and is the oldest continuously funded orchestra in North Carolina. It is recognized as one of the finest regional orchestras in the state under the direction of Maestro Fouad Fakhouri. "We invite you to come out and support this concert," said Martin. "It is always a great opportunity to get together with The Fayetteville Symphony and to do things." Ticket cost is $25 for adults, $22 for seniors and the military, and $10 for students and children.
