For months, people have asked me if I had watched Why We Ride? I had not until the other day. I downloaded it from iTunes during one of those rainy days. I was very surprised. Why We Ride is a documentary produced and directed by Bryan H. Carroll. The film does a wonderful job at documenting the history and passion of motorcycle riding and a very nice job of telling the story of motorcycling from the beginning to the present. The movie takes you to such places as Bonneville and Daytona as well as various motocross tracks and campsites in the California desert. You feel the speed of the sport racing bikes while enjoying the easy riding of the Harley- Davidson. The documentary interviews legends and champions of the sport. Although I did not count, it seemed that women were interviewed just as much as men. Two of my favorite interviews were with women. One of the stories featured a mother by the name of Laura Klock and her two daughters Erika Cobb and Karlee Cobb. All three have land speed records on motorcycles. They also interviewed Gloria Sturck who is 87 years old, and she is still riding. The film showed many types of riding such as racing, dirt bike competition and cruising but the footage of hill climbing was just insane. If you are not familiar with hill climbing, it is the art of riding your motorcycle up the side of a hill to vertical and beyond vertical dirt to make it over the top. Anything short of that is a long fall back down the hill. For me, the best part of the movie is the videography. The high speed and slow motion shots make it feel like you are part of the action. By the end of the movie, I did have a deeper appreciation of the sport and the many aspects of riding. If you or anyone you know enjoys riding then Why We Ride is a movie that is made for you, and one I would highly recommend.
