APRIL 2-8, 2014 UCW 21 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Everyone's Welcome at Mac's Speed Shop by MICHAEL SMITH In February of 2013, Up & Coming Weekly introduced a new Fayetteville dining option — Mac's Speed Shop. Mac's, as it is referred to by regulars, is out to become a prime dining destination for lovers of beer, bikes and barbecue. Co-owner David Jewell said that he has two expectations for the Fayetteville location, "We want to fill the needs of Fayetteville by serving great food and cold beer and giving good service in a nice clean atmosphere. My long term expectation … if we have a conversation 10 or 20 years from now, I want us to talk about how much we have given back to the Fayetteville community." Mac's General Manager, Mickey Visser, describes what has set Mac's apart from other dining options in the area as "a certain culture we have in here… a different style. It's comfortable and enjoyable for people to come in and hang out … it's a good environment." Mac's wants to be a place where "bike enthusiasts and pastors with their church groups can all feel welcome," said Visser. There is rock music playing overhead, more than 10 large screen televisions strategically placed around the room and a stage to accommodate live music on Thursday nights. Though some may perceive Mac's as a biker bar, Visser said, "You can feel comfortable bringing your children and grandparents. Everyone is welcome here." As soon as you walk in the door you are greeted by a view of the bar with numerous coolers full of various bottled beers and a row of draft pulls that stretches past 10 feet long. Visser said they have 380 different beer options available at the McPherson Church Road location and that the draft options are changed out regularly because, "... we get bored. We like to have the new cool stuff in." When it comes to local brews, Visser said, "We do all the local beers around here, we love it. Local beers are really important to us — we don't even have Bud Light on tap." Mac's has also brought their Beer Club to Fayetteville; the club rewards customers who pride themselves on being true enthusiasts and trying various types of beers. The menu is built around hickory smoked barbecue complemented by comfort foods and an array of appetizers. The barbecue styles served are a mix of different types inspired by barbecues from across the nation. Mac's offers pulled pork, baby back ribs, beef ribs, brisket and other options, all smoked on site and prepared with their own signature rubs and sauces. If you are not in the mood for barbecue Mac's also offers options such as a fried catfish and a Cajun take on shrimp and grits; there is even "Mexicue." Fayetteville resident Casey Mock called the salads that are on the menu as "a pleasant surprise" and the Beer Can Chicken "delicious." Mock also recommended the Mini Scooters Sampler calling the smoked pork, smoked brisket and pimento cheese mini sandwiches "tied for her favorite." She summed up her experience by saying, "If you like a good time, good barbecue and a good beer selection, go to Mac's." During my visit to Mac's, I enjoyed the half slab of St. Louis Style Ribs Platter. I added the mac and cheese and baked beans as my two sides. The ribs were delicious and prepared perfectly, they had great flavor and were not under or over cooked. The portions were generous, the half slab was as large as some of the full slabs I have had at other rib restaurants. The platter paired with a cold Sam Adams Lager was perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Mac's Speed Shop; I will be joining the Beer Club and becoming one of the "regulars" that call Mac's home. Located off McPherson Church Road, Mac's Speed Shop offers great food, cold beer and excellent service in a pleasant atmosphere. MICHAEL SMITH, Local Resident, Con- tributing Writer. COMMENTS? CUMBERLAND Farmers Market Survey Results Available The results of the farmers market feasibility study are available online after consultants hired by Cumberland County Cooperative Extension presented their findings March 19. Cooperative Extension used grant funding from the N.C. Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund to hire The Earthwise Company to research and assess the best options for locating, re-organizing, managing, marketing, and operating a larger, more responsive farmers market in the county. The consultants gathered community input through public meetings, stakeholder interviews and an online survey. The most suitable location, the consultants said, is in the downtown area, near the current market location at the Transportation Museum and a short distance from Hay Street. They suggested four downtown area sites, with the ground floor of the Franklin Street Parking Deck topping the list. The survey is online at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/wp-content/ uploads/2014/03/CCFM_final_report.pdf.
