18 UCW APRIL 2-8, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Three Dog Night: A Howling Good Time at Givens by ERINN CRIDER Art is an important part of a thriving community and individual, diverse art even more so. The Givens Performing Arts Center (GPAC) at Pembroke serves the important function of providing the surrounding areas the opportunity to experience a variety of performing arts. One such opportunity is the band Three Dog Night coming to perform as part of the Broadway and More Series. By bringing Three Dog Night to Pembroke, the surrounding community is given an incredible opportunity though availability and through pricing. "Our shows give those who live in a rural community a chance to experience the arts in their own backyards, without traveling to a bigger city. Not only that, but we provide entertainment at inexpensive prices. For instance, tickets to our Broadway musicals are often more affordable than tickets at venues in larger cities," Chad Locklear the Director of Marketing explained. Three Dog Night found major success from their very beginnings in 1968. They have one of the best averages for Top 100 hits. This popularity has continued well past their inception. Through the decades they have preformed their music has remain timeless. From vinyl records to iTunes this band has sold a mind boggling amount of music; including numerous top 40 hits and three #1 hits. Some of the songs they are most famous for are "Black and White", "Shambala", and "Mama Told Me Not to Come." The band was created by Danny Hutton and Cory Wells. Now the lead vocalists, both men had extensive experience in music before forming this band. Jimmy Greenspoon is the keyboardist and Michael Allsup is the guitarist. Paul Kingery is on backup vocals as well as playing the bass. Pat Bautz on drums completes the unique and much-loved sound that these men create together. One of the reasons that the band remains so popular is its rigorous and unfailing dedication to the music they love. Unlike most bands they do not remain static in their style and performance. They have a distinctive style, but also experiment. For example, they have recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, experimented with a capella as with "Prayer of the Children", and they continue to release new songs. This mix of new and old reaches new audiences as well as the tried and true long-time fans. It also demonstrates that these men are still working to improve and are very active in their art. Three Dog Night's activity can also be seen in their impressive touring schedule. The band took a break in 1975, but by 1981 they were making music together again. The love for their music was too strong to ignore. Since rejoining, the band has played more than 2,200 shows. In their more than 40 years of performing they have also played at two Super Bowls. Currently the band plays about 80 shows a year, which is an impressive show of dedication. Three Dog Night will be at the Givens Performing Arts Center on April 4. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $30 to $20. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 910-521-6361.
